Lobos take top spot in MW Mountain Division

The University of New Mexico women’s soccer team recorded its sixth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over Colorado College to secure the top spot in the Mountain Division on Sunday.

The Lobos (7-1 MW) will play for the Mountain West Conference championship, scheduled for April 17, at a location yet to be determined.

“It’s been a really trying year for everyone, and as a team, we’ve worked really hard to make sure to protect our culture and stay true to who we are,” UNM coach Heather Dyche said in a release. “When that hard work pays off, it’s a pretty incredible feeling for our players.”

Junior Jaelyn Hendren delivered the game-winning goal in the 59th minute. The Lobos were awarded a free kick, which junior Karlee Maes took. Maes got the ball inside the box. Hendren then gained possession at the mouth of the goal and finished it with a ball to the back of the net.

Colorado College (4-2-2 MW) posted eight shots, forcing three saves from UNM senior goalkeeper Emily Johnson. The Lobos had a total of nine shots, two on goal.

This is the fourth time in Lobo history that the team clinched the division title, the last time in 2018.

The Lobos will face the West Division winner in the championship game. The Lobos will look to win their first Mountain West Tournament title since 2011.

The team now returns home to close out the regular season with two games, starting with a 7:30 p.m. match against Wyoming on Friday. The Lobos then play host to Colorado State at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex.

TRACK AND FIELD: Carlos Salcido was one of four winners for UNM, which had 21 top-10 performances at the Jo Meaker Classic in Canyon, Texas on Saturday.

Salcido finished first in the men’s 400 meters in 46.56 seconds.

UNM’s Tianna Holmes won the women’s 400 meters in 53.31.

Shannon Fritz took the top spot in the women’s pole vault, clearing 12 feet, 6¼ inches, while teammate Kiara QuezadaArzate finished second at 11-6½.

Gabriel Brown won the men’s pole vault for the Lobos at 17-0¾.

UNM will next compete in the Drake Relays at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, April 22-24.

NMSU: Makiya Moore was the only champion for the Aggies, who also competed in the Jo Meaker Classic on Saturday.

Moore won the women’s discus with a personal-best throw of 47.22 meters (154 feet, 11 inches).
