Spring Open Space events focus on area flora, fauna and severe weather

Bernalillo County Open Space will be offering events in April and May for residents interested in gardening, sustainable landscaping, weather and more. All the events are virtual and free.

INATURALIST TUTORIAL: ALBUQUERQUE CITY NATURE CHALLENGE

9-11 a.m. Saturday, April 24. Registration closes April 23.

Albuquerque’s City Nature Challenge Coordinators Laurel Ladwig and Selena Connealy will teach how to use the iNaturalist app to help identify local flora and fauna. Learn more about the City Nature Challenge event taking place at this time and how you can participate.

GROWING A BACKYARD REFUGE: HOW TO GET STARTED

9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15.

Registration closes May 14.

In this workshop, participants will use the ABQ Backyard Refuge Program (ABQBRP) workbook and learn a myriad of ways the Bachechi Open Space might better support local plants and wildlife. Meet with the ABQBRP team who will feature Bachechi Open Space as an example to demonstrate the first steps in creating a certified habitat and in turn, to be able to create and certify your own garden as a backyard refuge.

SKYWARD SPOTTER TRAINING 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 22. Registration closes May 21.

Join a National Weather Service of Albuquerque meteorologist who will teach the basics of severe local storms. This twohour workshop includes training about thunderstorms, flash floods, downburst winds, tornadoes and more. This event is part of the volunteer SKYWARN weather spotters and volunteer training or the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS).
