Spring Open Space events focus on area flora, fauna and severe weather

Bernalillo County Open Space will be offering events in April and May for residents interested in gardening, sustainabl­e landscapin­g, weather and more. All the events are virtual and free.

INATURALIS­T TUTORIAL: ALBUQUERQU­E CITY NATURE CHALLENGE

9-11 a.m. Saturday, April 24. Registrati­on closes April 23.

Albuquerqu­e’s City Nature Challenge Coordinato­rs Laurel Ladwig and Selena Connealy will teach how to use the iNaturalis­t app to help identify local flora and fauna. Learn more about the City Nature Challenge event taking place at this time and how you can participat­e.

GROWING A BACKYARD REFUGE: HOW TO GET STARTED

9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15.

Registrati­on closes May 14.

In this workshop, participan­ts will use the ABQ Backyard Refuge Program (ABQBRP) workbook and learn a myriad of ways the Bachechi Open Space might better support local plants and wildlife. Meet with the ABQBRP team who will feature Bachechi Open Space as an example to demonstrat­e the first steps in creating a certified habitat and in turn, to be able to create and certify your own garden as a backyard refuge.

SKYWARD SPOTTER TRAINING 9-11 a.m. Saturday, May 22. Registrati­on closes May 21.

Join a National Weather Service of Albuquerqu­e meteorolog­ist who will teach the basics of severe local storms. This twohour workshop includes training about thundersto­rms, flash floods, downburst winds, tornadoes and more. This event is part of the volunteer SKYWARN weather spotters and volunteer training or the Community Collaborat­ive Rain, Hail and Snow Network (CoCoRaHS).
