Mystery donor gives Ags $500,000
Several programs to receive benefits
New Mexico State Athletics said Tuesday that an anonymous donor has put up $500,000 to benefit several of its programs.
“In good times this gift would be cause for a major celebration, during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic it is truly astonishing,” said NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia.
New Mexico State said football, men’s golf, women’s golf, women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, soccer and volleyball, are all benefiting.
Football has already made use of its portion of the gift, purchasing a CoachComm sideline communication system which makes in-game communication between coaches on the field and in the press box possible.
The system made its debut on the sidelines in the Aggies’ 32-26 win over Dixie State on March 7 at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
Aggie football will also be on the receiving end of a new video server that helps coaches and staff break down film from both practice and games.
Golf has been making use of a brand new swing analyzer purchased with some of the funds. Soccer will create a graduate assistant coaching position.
Facility improvements are on the way for volleyball and the track and field teams, the university said.
The athletic training department will receive new rehabilitation equipment and be able to receive specialized training.
“This is one of the largest gifts received in the history of the athletic program,” Moccia said.
“I believe this will serve as a springboard into this summer and fall and propel us into a great 2021-22 athletic season. I would like to extend my personal thanks to the anonymous donor and those who helped bring this gift from the discussion phase to reality.”
