Lobo golfers have some catching up to do

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — The New Mexico women’s golf team is tied for second place in the nine-team Mountain West Conference championships, but the bad news is the tournament has a runaway leader.

San Diego State is at 6-over-par 582 and up 11 strokes on the pre-meet favorite Lobos and Fresno State heading into Wednesday’s last of three rounds on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club.

On Tuesday, UNM shot 300 and trailed SDSU by 16 strokes after one round, then made up some ground with its 293 in round two. The Lobos’ Lauren Lehigh and Myah McDonald shot 73-72 on Tuesday and are among four players tied in fifth, three strokes behind individual leader Sara Kjellker of San Diego State.

In Boulder City, Nevada, New Mexico ■ State’s Suthavee “Pun” Chanachai was the individual star during Tuesday’s round two, but the Aggies lost their first-round lead and will need to make up ground heading into Wednesday’s final round of the Western Athletic Conference women’s golf championships.

At Boulder Creek Golf Club, Grand Canyon, at 4-under 572, erased a three-shot deficit and leads by two heading into Wednesday’s play. GCU shot 282 to the Aggies’ 287 on Tuesday. Seattle University (19-over), Utah Valley (21over) and UT Rio Grande Valley (plus-35) round out the field.

Chanachai, meanwhile, had the best round of the day at 4-under-par 68, sinking seven birdies, to storm into second place at 2-under 142, two strokes behind GCU’s Payton Fehringer.

BASEBALL: UNM’s Mountain West Conference home series vs. UNLV scheduled for Saturday and Sunday has been canceled due to a positive COVID-19 test and the resulting contact tracing within the UNLV baseball program announced last week. The Lobos (8-14, 6-9), who haven’t played since April 3 because of their own covid issues, are looking at finding another weekend opponent.

NMSU: No. 18-ranked Arizona (24-11) defeated the Aggies, 11-4. Brandon Dieter went 2 for 3 with a run and a double to lead NMSU (11-22).

VOLLEYBALL: New Mexico State’s two-time All-Western Athletic Conference selection Savannah Davison has announced she will enter the transfer portal. She enters as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility, the Sun-News reports.

TENNIS: NMSU senior Nicolas Buitrago was named WAC men’s singles player of the week while WAC junior Louis Menard and freshman Jordy Visser earned doubles honors.
