Emile Hirsch, Thomas Jane filming ‘Dig’ in Las Cruces
Crew of 30 New Mexicans involved in production
Las Cruces is getting a piece of the film industry pie.
The New Mexico Film Office announced on Tuesday that the independent film “Dig” is in production. It stars Thomas Jane and Emile Hirsch and is produced by Dig Films LLC.
“Dig” is the story of a widower’s strained relationship with his deaf teenage daughter, which is tested when they are held hostage by two intruders and are forced to dig under a vacant house, revealing a dark secret from the past.
The production marks a return to New Mexico for both of the stars.
Jane recently filmed “Slayers” in Albuquerque. Meanwhile, Hirsch is returning to New Mexico — he lived in Santa Fe until the age of 10.
Amber Dodson of the New Mexico Film Office said the division continues to market every corner of the state to filmmakers.
“Las Cruces has a lot to offer productions, including beautiful and diverse landscapes and locations, production support, hotels, restaurants, and other amenities,” Dodson said.
The production also qualifies for an additional 5% tax incentive because it is filming outside of the Albuquerque/Santa Fe corridor.
Currently, the state film incentive offers a 25 to 30% tax incentive on New Mexico goods and services.
“Film and media is an important part of the creative and economic life of the area and the southern region of New Mexico and we are happy to have them in the community,” said Don Gray, director of Film Las Cruces.
“Dig” is directed by K. Asher Levin and produced by Daniel Cummings and Robert Dean. All three were involved with “Slayers.”
“We are all excited to have the opportunity to shoot in New Mexico to take full advantage of the state’s distinct and diverse landscapes, as well as stellar crew,” Cummings said.
According to the Film Office, the production will employ around 30 New Mexico crew members and five New Mexico principal talent.
