Lobo baseball loses series opener at Washington in 10

Aggie golfers sweep big WAC awards

SEATTLE — New Mexico (8-15) squandered a quality start from Nathaniel Garley and fell 4-3 in 10 innings to host Washington (1617) on Friday in the opener of a three-game baseball series.

The two teams agreed to play only this week after their scheduled conference opponents (UNLV for the Lobos, Stanford for Washington) had COVID-19 issues that forced the games to be called off. Game two in the series is 3 p.m. Saturday.

Shortstop Mack Chambers had three of UNM’s 11 hits, raising his average to .392. Garley allowed three runs over seven innings with no walks and five strikeouts. He left with the game tied at 3. Washington pushed across a walkoff run in the 10th vs. Cody Dye (1-2). UNM had bases loaded with one out in the top of the 10th but blew a squeeze bunt play, spoiling the inning.

In Stephenville, Texas, host ■ Tarleton State had a six-run sixth inning, after New Mexico State scored five in the top of the frame, and won 12-8. The 11-23 Aggies have lost eight straight games.

GOLF: The New Mexico State women won the Western Athletic Conference tournament on Wednesday, then won league’s big postseason honors on Friday. Amelia McKee was named player of the year, Alison Gastelum freshman of the year and Danny Bowen coach of the year. And senior Pun Chanachai was named first-team All-WAC for the fourth time in her career.

The Aggies, along with Mountain West champion New Mexico, learn which NCAA Regional they are going to during Wednesday’s selection show, which airs at noon on the Golf Channel.

The Aggies men, meanwhile, sit 16th after two rounds of the Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. The Aggies shot a 589 (+13) in 36 holes Friday. New Mexico stands second at 14-under, but was one of eight teams that didn’t complete its second round in the 20-team event.

SOFTBALL: In St. George, Utah, Matalasi Faapito homered and earned the pitching win despite allowing 12 hits over five innings as New Mexico State (2318, 8-3), won 9-4 over host Dixie State (18-22, 6-7) in game one of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader, then finished with a 10-7 nightcap win. The Aggies came into Friday tied with Seattle University for first place in the seven-team league.

UNM (4-30) hosts Boise State ■ in a twin bill Saturday at 2 p.m.

TENNIS: In Reno, Nevada, the Lobo women (8-8, 2-6 Mountain West) defeated Nevada 4-0.

New Mexico will complete its 2021 season Saturday in Reno at 2:30 p.m. in a match against Fresno State.
