FORT WORTH — TCU and football coach Gary Patterson have mutually agreed to immediately part ways.

The announcement came Sunday night, a day after the Horned Frogs (3-5, 1-4 Big 12) lost 31-12 at Kansas State, Patterson’s alma mater. It was their fifth loss in six games.

Patterson leaves TCU with a 18179 record in 21 seasons, including an undefeated 13-0 season in 2010 that was capped by a Rose Bowl victory. He was the second-longest tenured FBS coach, trailing only Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who is in his 23rd season.

Former Minnesota coach Jerry Kill, who was the best man in Patterson’s wedding and on his staff as an offensive analyst, will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The Horned Frogs host 14th-ranked Baylor on Saturday.

Patterson, 61, an assistant at New Mexico in 1996-97, is the second Big 12 head coach let go in two weeks. Texas Tech fired thirdyear coach Matt Wells last week, also after a loss to Kansas State.

TCU’s only Big 12 win was 52-31 at Texas Tech on Oct. 9. A week after that, the Horned Frogs lost 52-31 to fourth-ranked Oklahoma.

TOP 25: Michigan State moved up to No. 5 in The Associated Press college football poll, and Wake Forest became a top-10 team on Sunday for the first time in school history.

Georgia is a unanimous No. 1 for the fourth straight week. The rest of the top four was unchanged from last week, with Cincinnati at No. 2, Alabama at No. 3 and Oklahoma at No. 4.

Star running back Kenneth Walker and the Spartans jumped three spots by beating Michigan in the weekend’s biggest game. The last time Michigan State broke into the top five was 2015.

The first CFP selection committee rankings of the season will be released Tuesday night.

The Demon Deacons have their best ranking in program history, topping the No. 11 they reached in 1947. Wake Forest reached another first on Saturday, improving to 8-0 with a victory against Duke.

UTSA: Coach Jeff Traylor have agreed to a contract extension worth $28 million that runs through the 2031 season for the 16th-ranked team. The school announced Sunday that Traylor’s annual salary will average $2.8 million.

BOWL ELIGIBILITY: There are 82 bowl slots available in the FBS — for what should be a more normal postseason after several bowls last season were canceled.

So far, 36 teams have secured bowl eligibility by getting to six wins. That includes UTEP (6-2), which is bowl eligible for the first time since 2014 despite a 28-25 loss

DIEGO STATE 20: In Carson, Calif., on Saturday, Jake Haener passed for 306 yards and a touchdown, Jordan Mims rushed for a career-high 186 yards and two scores, and the Bulldogs (7-2, 4-1) handed then- No. 21 San Diego State its first loss of the season with a 30-20 victory. On Sunday, the Bulldogs re-entered the poll at No. 25.

San Diego State (7-1, 3-1) came into the game second in the nation in third-down percentage defense, fourth against the run and fifth in total defense, but it struggled to keep pace. Fresno State converted 9 of 18 third downs and went three-and-out only three times in 13 drives.
