Mary Ann Beck
Mary Ann Beck,
70, died peacefully at her home in Albuquerque on November 3, 2021. She was born to Paul Kenneth and Mary Evelyn Beck on October 25,1951 in Roswell NM.
In her youth, Mary Ann loved horseback riding.
She traveled extensively throughout Europe, including a backpacking trip through England, Scotland, and Wales. She graduated from Goddard High School in Roswell and earned a BA degree in Art from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. As a graduate student, she taught math and was a member of the UNM women’s rugby team. In 1978, close to completing a second bachelor’s degree, she suffered a recreational accident which resulted in a severe spinal cord injury. Her family and friends were inspired by the formidable courage she brought to her struggle with relentlessly complex challenges. Care providers knew her as a bright, articulate, witty patient whose enthusiasm made her a naturally supportive friend. She especially enjoyed a lifelong passion for the creative arts, which included drawing, painting, sculpting and animation. Her cats, Catastrophe and Printz were a great comfort to her and Duck has been an endearing companion for over 17 years.
Mary Ann is preceded in death by her father, Paul K. Beck; her mother, Mary Evelyn Roberts and her stepfather Jerry W. Roberts. Those left to cherish her memory are her brothers Charles and his wife Beverly of Roswell NM; Bill and his wife Karen of Albuquerque NM; nephews Brice Beck and Wyatt Beck of El Paso TX; great niece, Heather Beck of El Paso TX; and countless friends who will dearly miss her.
The family wishes to express their gratitude to Mary Ann’s many caregivers and especially to her trusted friend, Carmela Chavez, who lovingly cared for her over many years.
A private family memorial will take place at a later date. Because Mary Ann loved bats, anyone who wishes to make a donation in her memory can do so to Bat Conservation International. ( Batcon.org)
