Lawrence overcomes ankle injury in win

-

The Jacksonville Jaguars overcome a huge scare to rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence during their 9-6 upset of the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

Lawrence, the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, was helped to the locker room for X-rays on his right ankle after getting stepped on in the second quarter. But he returned a few plays later, much to the relief of the Jags, who won just their second game, and first in the United States.

“I’m feeling a little bit better,” Lawrence said. “We scanned it. Nothing concerning there. We’ll see how it feels (Monday) and the rest of the week. I’m sure it’s going to be sore, but we’ll see. I’m just going to get a bunch of treatment and try to get back healthy.”

Rookie left tackle Walker Little, making his first start in place of Cam Robinson (back), was pushed into Lawrence and stepped on him during a passing play. Lawrence tried to put weight on his ankle and couldn’t. Trainers helped him straight to the locker room before he returned.

BROWNS: As Baker Mayfield walked off the field at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati on Sunday, he tipped his ballcap to Cleveland fans who were gleeful about one of the most gutsy performances of the quarterback’s NFL career.

Mayfield revealed he has yet to hear from Odell Beckham Jr. in the aftermath of the wide receiver forcing his way out of Cleveland.

After the triumph, Mayfield addressed media for the first since Wednesday, when the Beckham situation hadn’t yet been resolved. At the time, Mayfield said he held out hope OBJ would return to the team and they could work through their issues.

“My feelings haven’t changed. I wish him well,” Mayfield said in his postgame news conference. “From a personal standpoint, he’s a good friend of mine. We still haven’t talked, but that doesn’t change things. I wish him well. I wish him the best in his career, but I’m worried about the guys in our locker room.

RAVENS/VIKINGS: AFC North-leading Baltimore learned after a 34-31 overtime win over the Minnesota Vikings that safety DeShon Elliott will likely be out for the rest of season with an injury to his pectoral/bicep area.

Minnesota put safety Harrison Smith on the reserve/COVID-19 list before the game, and coach Mike Zimmer said he’ll likely be out next week too.

EAGLES: DeVonta Smith had his best all-around game playing with a heavy heart.

The Philadelphia rookie wide receiver caught five passes for 116 yards and one TD in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday after an emotional week.

Smith is a close friend of former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs III, who was arrested for a crash that claimed the life of a woman and her dog Tuesday night.

“My heart breaks for everybody involved, the family and the young lady that lost her life,” said Smith, who played with Ruggs at Alabama. “It was rough in the beginning, but being with the guys helped me through it.”
