Solicitations for favorites inappropriate

-

I JUST received this letter from (Albuquerque City) Councilors Pat Davis and Isaac Benton today:

“A big change in city hall … By now, we’re sure you’ve heard that westside voters made some big changes to the city council this election.

When the new council is seated in January, Republicans will have at least 3 seats — and two runoff seats in Districts 7 and 9 could give them a majority.

That means our plans to create permanent housing programs, fund more community social workers and accelerate our climate leadership agenda would all be in jeopardy.

Republican candidates were the top vote-getters in both races, but Democrats held them to less than 50% and forced the runoff.

Emboldened by Republican energy in Virginia and seeing an opportunity to take over the city council, big corporate interests and top GOP operatives are lining up to help (Rob’s opponent is paying none other than Jay McCleskey, the GOP operative who ran Gov. Martinez’s operations and Manny Gonzales’ failed mayoral bid).

But it doesn’t have to be this way. That’s why we both personally donated to Tammy’s and Rob’s races, and why we are asking you to match our contribution.

We set up this special ActBlue page to split every donation evenly between Rob and Tammy to ensure we can fight on both fronts before Election Day.

Can you donate $200 now — $100 for each campaign -— to turn out Democratic voters and keep our city council blue? Thank you in advance! — Pat & Ike” I am diametrically opposed to any councilor soliciting donations for their special favorites trying to get elected.

If voters create a different City Council, it must be because we are trying to change what is or is not happening in this city.
