Georgia knocks off 18th-ranked Memphis

Colorado State wins to stay undefeated

ATHENS, Ga. — Jabri AbdurRahim’s 3-pointer with less than 2 minutes remaining gave Georgia the lead, and the Bulldogs snapped their four-game losing streak by beating No. 18 Memphis 82-79 on Wednesday night.

The 3-pointer by Abdur-Rahim, who scored 15 points, gave the Bulldogs a 78-77 lead over the Tigers, who led most of the second half. Kario Oquendo, who scored a game-high 24 points, followed with a steal and jam that extended the lead to three points.

Following a missed free throw by Landers Nolley II of Memphis, Georgia’s Jailyn Ingram made one of two free throws for an 81-77 lead. A jam by Nolley, who led the Tigers with 17 points, cut the lead to two points.

Following Christian Wright’s free throw, which pushed Georgia’s lead to three points, Memphis was left with 4.5 seconds to set up a possible tying 3-pointer. Emoni Bates’ heave from just past midcourt bounced off the rim.

Memphis (5-2) suffered its second consecutiv­e defeat, following Friday’s 78-59 loss to Iowa State that caused the Tigers to drop from No. 9 in the AP Top 25.

Georgia (3-5) took its second surprising win over a ranked Memphis team in less than two years.

The Bulldogs beat then-No. 9 Memphis 65-62 on Jan. 4, 2020.

UTAH VALLEY 72, NO. 12 BYU 65 (OT): In Orem, Utah, Fardaws Aimaq had 24 points and 22 rebounds, Justin Harmon also scored 24 points and Utah Valley stunned BYU in overtime.

Connor Harding added 10 points for the Wolverines (7-1), who beat the Cougars for the second time in school history.

Alex Barcello led BYU (6-1) with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Spencer Johnson added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Seneca Knight and Te’Jon Lucas scored 10 points apiece.

No. 5 UCLA 73, COLORADO 61: In Los Angeles, Tyger Campbell scored 21 points and UCLA recovered after blowing most of a 17-point, first-half lead to beat Colorado in the Bruins’ Pac-12 opener.

Johnny Juzang added 15 points and Myles Johnson had 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Bruins (7-1, 1-0 Pac-12).

Jabari Walker had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Buffaloes (6-2, 1-1).

No. 22 MICHIGAN STATE 73, LOUISVILLE 64: In East Lansing, Mich., Malik Hall scored eight of his 15 points in a 1:34 stretch early in the second half, helping Michigan State build a big lead it needed to hold off Louisville in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Spartans (6-2) overcame 19 turnovers by playing well in spurts and making 10 of 18 3-pointers.

Mountain West

When Nevada beat Pepperdine 79-66 on Tuesday, the Wolf Pack (4-4) did so without head coach Steve Alford and assistant Craig Neal, both former New Mexico head coaches. Alford tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday morning and said in a statement he will isolate for 10 days. Neal, Nevadaspor­tsnet.com reported, was the second Wolf Pack staffer held out because of protocols.

Nevada said it has a 100 percent vaccinatio­n rate among its players and staff in the men’s basketball program, making Alford’s positive test a breakthrou­gh case.

Assistant coach Kory Barnett is serving as acting head coach for Nevada in the meantime. One of the program’s graduate assistants is Cullen Neal, former Eldorado and Lobo (and Ole Miss and St. Mary’s) player.

COLORADO STATE 86, ARKANSAS-LITTLE ROCK 55: In Fort Collins, Colo., Isaiah Stevens had 12 points and 12 assists to lead Colorado State to a win over Arkansas-Little Rock to improve to 8-0.

David Roddy had 12 points and three blocks for Colorado State. Kendle Moore and Adam Thistlewoo­d each added 11 points. John Tonje had 10 points.

Isaiah Palermo had 16 points for the Trojans (4-4). Kevin Osawe added 11 points.

SMU 83, UNLV 64: In Dallas, Kendric Davis had 18 points and eight assists and Michael Weathers posted 14 points, nine rebounds and six assists as SMU topped UNLV.

Emmanuel Bandoumel had 13 points for SMU (6-3), which earned its sixth consecutiv­e home victory. Tristan Clark added 10 points.

Royce Hamm Jr. had 13 points for the Runnin’ Rebels (4-4).

FRESNO STATE 63, SAN DIEGO 43: In Fresno, Calif., Orlando Robinson registered 15 points, five assists and three blocks as Fresno State easily beat San Diego.

Jordan Campbell had 12 points for Fresno State (6-1), which earned its fourth straight home victory. Anthony Holland added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Vladimir Pinchuk had 11 points for the Toreros (4-5).

Women

UC DAVIS 64, No. 18 OREGON 57:

In Eugene, Ore., Cierra Hall scored 13 points, Sage Stobbart scored all 11 of her points in the second half, and UC Davis ended No. 18 Oregon’s 44-game home winning streak against nonconfere­nce opponents.

Oregon is 3-3.
