Rice game-winner lifts Aggies over UTEP

NMSU sweeps Miners in rivalry

EL PASO — Jabari Rice hit a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds showing on the clock to give the New Mexico State Aggies a 72-69 win over the UTEP Miners in front of an announced Don Haskins Center crowd of 6,392.

The win gives NMSU (6-2) a sweep over the Miners (4-3).

Rice had 19 points to lead four Aggies in double figures, including Will McNair’s career-high 18.

NMSU head coach Chris Jans, who had missed his team’s previous two games due to COVID protocols, was back on the bench for the Aggies, who play the UNM Lobos on Monday in the Pit. The Miners play at No. 8 Kansas on Tuesday then in the Pit vs. UNM on Dec. 12.

NO. 2 PURDUE 77, IOWA 70: In West Lafayette, Ind., Jaden Ivey scored 19 points, Trevion Williams had 13 points and 18 rebounds, and the Boilermake­rs held off a late rally in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

NO. 8 KANSAS 95, ST. JOHN’S 75: In New York, Christian Braun had a career-high 31 points, Ochai Agbaji scored 23 and the Jayhawks turned back a second-half charge in the first basketball game at new UBS Arena, home of the NHL’s New York Islanders.

NO. 7 TEXAS 88, UT-RIO GRANDE VALLEY 58: In Austin, Texas, Christian Bishop scored 17 points and Texas used suffocatin­g defense in the second half to beat Texas Rio Grande Valley.

NO. 15 HOUSTON 111, BRYANT 44: In Houston, Tramon

Mark tied a career high with 22 points, Josh Carlton added 17 and Houston routed Bryant for its third straight win.

BOISE STATE 63, TULSA 58:

In Boise, Idaho, Marcus Shaver Jr. registered 17 points as Boise State narrowly beat Tulsa 63-58.

Abu Kigab had 17 points for Boise State (4-4). Emmanuel Akot added 12 points. Tyson Degenhart had 11 points.

SAN JOSE STATE 76, NORTH DAKOTA 51:

In San Jose, Calif., the Spartans held the Fighting Hawks to 26.3% shooting (15of-57) and are on a three-game non-conference winning streak for the first time since 2016.

Trey Smith and Trey Anderson each had 17 points for SJSU (4-3), two of four Spartans in double figures.

MARYLAND: Men’s basketball coach Mark Turgeon and the University of Maryland announced Friday they’ve parted ways, less than than a month into his 11th season.

Turgeon, who’d led the Terps to appearance­s in five of the past six NCAA Tournament­s and was 226-116 overall since taking over over for Gary Williams in 2011. Assistant Danny Manning will serve as the interim coach for the remainder of the season.

NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 65, KANSAS STATE 44:

In Columbia, S.C., Aliyah Boston had 21 points and 17 rebounds to lead the Gamecocks to their first 9-0 start in six years, topping the Wildcats in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

NO. 21 UCONN 74, SETON HALL 49 :

In South Orange, N.J., Paige Bueckers had 23 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and five steals to lead the Huskies in their Big East opener.
