Dodgers sweep Arizona, extend win streak to 5

Rockies end long skid against Giants

LOS ANGELES — Justin Turner hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied past the Arizona Diamondbac­ks 5-3 on Wednesday to complete a four-game sweep.

The Dodgers won their fifth straight overall, finishing off a 5-3 homestand that included eight games in seven days and four within 42 hours.

David Price came off the COVID-19 list and made a key contributi­on in relief as LA sent Arizona to its fifth loss in a row.

Turner sent a 3-2 pitch from Zach Davies (2-2) into the lower left-field pavilion, putting the Dodgers in front 4-2 in the fourth.

“It certainly helps to have all these guys in front of you,” Turner said, referring to Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Trea Turner, among others. “It’s a lot more fun to go up and hit.”

Gavin Lux added a two-out RBI single in the fourth to make it 5-2. Walker Buehler (5-1) got the win.

ROCKIES 5, GIANTS 3: In Denver, C.J. Cron hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in a three-run eighth inning as Colorado stopped its 12-game losing streak against San Francisco.

Logan Webb retired 16 straight batters in pursuit of becoming the major leagues’ first six-game winner and led 3-2 when pinch-hitter Connor Joe singled leading off the eighth. José Álvarez (1-1) relieved, Charlie Blackmon sacrificed and Yonathan Daza extended his hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single.

Cron followed with a 454-foot drive to left for his 10th home run. It was the first homer allowed by Alvarez since May 29.

RED SOX 5, ASTROS 1: In Boston, Nick Pivetta (2-4) pitched a two-hitter, Xander Bogaerts hit a solo home run, Rafael Devers added an RBI double and Boston beat Houston in the rubber match of their three-game series.

It marked the first complete game by a Red Sox pitcher since Chris Sale on June 5, 2019, at Kansas City.

It was the first at Fenway Park since Rick Porcello vs. the New York Yankees on Aug. 3, 2018.

Kiké Hernández and Christian Vázquez added RBI singles for Boston, which took two of three from the team that beat it in the ALCS last season.

METS 11, CARDINALS 4: In New York, Max Scherzer pulled himself from a start with discomfort in his left side before New York finished off St. Louis.

Pete Alonso homered and drove in four runs for the Mets, who improved to 13-1 following a loss. Jeff McNeil had an early two-run single and Alonso snapped a 2-all tie with an RBI single off rookie reliever Jake Walsh (0-1) in a fourrun fifth inning.

PHILLIES 3, PADRES 0 : In Philadelph­ia, Zack Wheeler struck out nine over seven innings, Rhys Hoskins homered and Philadelph­ia beat San Diego.

Wheeler (2-3), who lost his first three starts of the season, had yet another outing more in line with the ones that helped him finish second in NL Cy Young Award voting last season. He allowed four hits and walked none over 94 pitches.

BREWERS 7, BRAVES 6 (11): In Milwaukee, Keston Hiura returned to the majors and hit a two-run, winning homer off Jesse Chavez in the 11th inning as Milwaukee rallied from a four-run deficit to beat Atlanta.

The Brewers had tied it with two outs in the ninth on an RBI triple from Kolten Wong.

Hiura, called up from Triple-A Nashville earlier in the day, led off the bottom of the 11th by sending a 1-2 sinker from Chavez (0-1) over the center-field wall.

TWINS 14, ATHLETICS 4: In Oakland, Calif., Carlos Correa went 2 for 4 with an RBI double in his return from a stint on the injured list caused by a bruised middle finger on his right hand, and Minnesota set a season high for runs in a rout of the A’s.

Gary Sánchez went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs.

YANKEES 3, ORIOLES 2: In Baltimore, Gerrit Cole (4-0) outpitched Jordan Lyles in a duel of veteran right-handers as New York squeezed past Baltimore.

Gleyber Torres hit an RBI double and scored in a three-run first inning that propelled the Yankees to their 21st win in 24 games, including nine of their last 10.

New York’s 28-9 start is tied for second-best in the majors since 1948, trailing only the 1984 Detroit Tigers at 32-5.

RAYS 6, TIGERS 1: In St. Petersburg, Fla., Isaac Paredes homered twice against his former teammates to double his career bigleague total, helping Tampa Bay beat Detroit on an afternon the Tigers’ Eduardo Rodriguez left in the first inning and headed to the injured list.

Rodriguez (1-3) lasted just one out and averaged 91.9 mph for his fastball, 2.4 mph below his season average. He left the mound with the Tigers head athletic trainer.

RANGERS 6, ANGELS 5 (10): In Arlington, Texas, Nathaniel Lowe hit a two-run homer on the first pitch in the bottom of the 10th inning and Texas completed a three-game sweep of Los Angeles.

The Angels tied it at 4 on Jared Walsh’s second homer of the game, a two-run shot in the ninth inning. They went ahead in the top of the 10th on a fielder’s choice grounder by Mike Trout, who homered earlier in the game.

MARINERS 5, BLUE JAYS 1: In Toronto, Ty France hit a tworun homer, Marco Gonzales (2-4) pitched six solid innings to snap a five-start winless streak and Seattle beat Toronto.

Cal Raleigh and Abraham Toro each hit solo home runs and Jesse Winker added a sac fly for the Mariners.

NATIONALS 5, MARLINS 4 (10): In Miami, Keibert Ruiz had three hits, including a go-ahead double in the 10th inning, and Washington topped Miami.

César Hernández tripled and doubled, Maikel Franco singled twice, and Juan Soto had three walks for the Nationals, who avoided their second threegame sweep to the Marlins this season.

PIRATES 3, CUBS 2: In Chicago, rookie Jack Suwinski, who attended high school 20 minutes from Wrigley Field, hit a tie-breaking home run and Pittsburgh ended Chicago’s four-game winning streak.

Suwinski made his major league debut this season and began the day hitting .183 with two homers. With the score 2-all, the 23-year-old outfielder from Taft High School opened the fifth inning with a drive off Drew Smyly (1-5) that barely cleared the center-field wall.

ROYALS 6, WHITE SOX 2: In Kansas City, Mo., Bobby Witt Jr. and MJ Melendez homered and fellow rookie Emmanuel Rivera hit a go-ahead triple, leading Kansas City over Chicago.

Witt, Melendez and Rivera each had two hits.

Rookie Collin Snyder (3-1) recorded the final out of the sixth for the win. Reynaldo Lopez (4-1) took the loss.
