Joel was raised in Windsor, Ontario and trained at the University of Toronto School of Medicine. He graduated from Wayne State University, served his internship at the University of Michigan and received his training in dermatology at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. B was a professor at the University of New Mexico’s Department of Dermatology and was a partner at Albuquerque Dermatology Associates for 47 years, where he treated generations of patients. He loved practicing medicine, cared about each of his patients, and cherished his coworkers.
Dr. Barkoff was such an avid sportsman that his daughter Lara thought he worked at the Tennis Club when she was a child. He was always in pursuit of perfection of his various endeavors from fly fishing practice wearing wading boots in the swimming pool to the ever present black jack practice game in the bathroom. Baseball was his first love but he also enjoyed music, reading, ice cream, travel and spending time with family at his condo in Pagosa Springs, where he read, played golf and tennis, skied and fished.
His laugh was contagious and he loved to slip a corny joke into any conversation. His wit and wisdom were appreciated by family and friends and he was loved by all who knew him. We honor Joel by being the best we can be at whatever we do.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Checks can be made out to La Tierra Sagrada Society and sent to:
