Dawn Evelyn Voelzow Martin

-

Dawn Evelyn Voelzow Martin, beloved wife, mother, and friend, passed away on November 8, 2021 from Alzheimer’s disease. She couldn’t believe she was

92. Her comment, made with her classic smile, was “That’s OLD!!”

To the end, Dawn was upbeat and enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio then moved to Toledo where she spent a happy childhood, often skating for hours at a time on the Maumee River or climbing trees with her friends. After earning a teaching degree she moved to New Mexico, where she taught elementary school, earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education, and worked in the APS main office helping other educators improve their teaching methods. She adored every minute of teaching, often finding innovative and loving ways to help each child. One of Dawn’s sons was heard to say, “Mom left an indelible mark on the lives she touched.” Dawn and her cherished husband, Jim Martin, enjoyed playing bridge, tennis, traveling, and dancing. They were always on the lookout for their next big adventure.

Dawn is survived by her husband Jim Martin who said, “Dawn was the most beautiful person anyone has ever had the privilege of knowing. As her husband of more than thirtyseven years, I was blessed for every day of that time. Dawn was the victim of Alzheimer’s disease, which made for a very long goodbye. The gates of heaven are richer her there.”

Dawn is also survived by daughters San Daugherty, Felonis Neuman, Justine Alires, Kaye (Chris) Pettit, and daughter-in-law Janice Daugherty. Her sons include Ben Martin, Grant Daugherty, Chris Martin (partner Bob Wuertz), and Jeff Daugherty. She was also blessed with thirteen grand-children and eight great grand-children. Dawn was preceded in death by her parents Hope Ivy (nee Treter) and Ewald (Jack) Gerhardt Voelzow, infant daughter Melanie Daugherty, son Mark Daugherty, and daughterin-law Cindy Daugherty.

Dawn is greatly missed for her gentle encouragement, fierce love and championing of her children, and her quick wit and smile. She was full of life and love, with a twinkle in her intelligent, blue eyes. The kindest, most gentle and loving woman now has her memory restored and is dancing in heaven with her family who she has missed greatly.
