Roy Michael Hertweck
October 22, 1952 – March 30, 2022
Roy M. Hertweck was born in Glenshaw, PA, and grew up on Middle Road in a house that his father built for his bride long before
Roy was born.
Roy was a proud member of the Hertweck/Murphy family and the fifth of six children. He graduated from North Catholic High School in 1970, where he studied mechanical drafting while dreaming of becoming an architect. He attended Penn State University, hitchhiking home on weekends to visit his friends and family and attending as many rock concerts as he could afford. Roy received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from Penn State in 1977. He hung up the portable tray he used to sell sodas at the Penn State football games and moved down south to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, before heading out west to Albuquerque, NM, to attend graduate school. He completed the Master’s program at the UNM School of Architecture and Planning and graduated with honors in 1983. In 1985, Roy became a licensed architect and loved his craft and his career until retiring from Sandia National Labs as a corporate architect in 2014.
Roy loved to travel and did so throughout his life. He enjoyed small towns and big cities (domestic and abroad), live music, great food, and lived for exploring notable architecture, and finding beauty in nature. He visited old friends and made new ones all over the world.
Most of all, Roy loved the Land of Enchantment. Its sunsets, “fingers of light,” watermelon mountains, hiking trails, beautiful vistas, and its cultural history. He resided in Albuquerque for the remainder of his life until his peaceful passing at home with his two adult children and longtime partner by his side.
Roy is survived by his adoring partner Marianne (Anna) Hall; his loving daughter Kara Kwako Garrett, her husband Nathan Garrett; two beautiful grandchildren, Ruby and Quincy Garrett in Macon, GA; his loving son Nate Hertweck in Torrance, CA; his siblings David Hertweck (Jackie), Marilyn Devereaux (Tom), Gary Hertweck (Margaret),Mark Hertweck (Judy); his nieces and nephews Alison, Rob, Kristi, Ryan, Carlos, JD, Stephanie, Thomas, Chelsea, Catherine, Will, Matt, Stacy, Shannon, Kyle, and Sarah; and his great-nieces and nephews Hannah, Broc, Luke, Sophia, James, Jack, Madison, Riley, Tristan, Brady, Addison, and Bailey.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents, James and Roz Hertweck; brother Jim Hertweck and Jim’s wife Alice Hertweck; and his niece Eileen Hertweck.
Due to COVID precautions, a Celebration of Life will be held in Roy’s honor sometime in the future, details to come. In the meantime, please stay healthy and keep smilin’. In lieu of flowers, please contact the UNM School of Architecture and Planning to donate to the memorial scholarship fund established in his name.
