Eugene Gerard Schiess

Eugene Gerard Schiess, age 94, a resident of Albuquerqu­e, NM, peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 12, 2022. He was born to Otto Schiess and Honora Quinlan-Schiess in Belfast, Ireland. Eugene worked for the Railroad at the age of 18, also at this time he entered the seminary in the United States. When he returned to Belfast he was than ordained a Servite Priest in the Order of the Servants of Mary (O. S.M). In 1952, Eugene returned to the states to teach at Catholic high schools and then assigned as Parochial Vicar of Our Lady of Belen Parish. In 1965, while Pastor in Canute, OK he applied for laicizatio­n from the Vatican, and this was granted. Eugene began his lay career at Westinghou­se Learning Corp. in Washington D.C. In 1968 he married Dolores Tabet and along with her four boys they lived in Newport News, VA. In 1970 the family returned to Albuquerqu­e. He was Executive Director of the Economic Opportunit­y Board and retired in 1992. Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Otto and Honora Schiess; brothers, Ernest and Desmond; sisters, Hermine, Irene, Klara and Noreen (Raymond); and father and mother-in-law Joe Tabet (Lily), daughter-in-law Paula Roybal-Sanchez. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dolores; sons, Gary, Donald (Becky), Gerard and Gerald; seven grandchild­ren and nine great-grandchild­ren with twin boys and another girl on the way; and many Irish nieces and nephews. Eugene was loved by all and will be remembered for his quick Irish wit. Dolores was the love of his life and provided a beautiful life for her and their family. A visitation will take place a 9:00 a. m. on Sunday, June 25, 2022 at Our Lady of Belen Catholic Church with a Rosary to begin at 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. with Interment to follow at Our Lady of Belen Memorial Gardens. Pallbearer­s will be Jason, Andres, Diego, Jake, Andre & Brady Sanchez. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Servites in Chicago, Il or to St. Mary’s Catholic School in Belen, NM.
