Marion "Lee" Smith

-

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Marion "Lee" Smith on Monday, February 13, 2023. Lee is survived by his wife of 56 years, Georgia; children: Douglas (Bonnie), Michael (Charla), Christine (Mike); six grandchildren: Garrett, Dallas, TX, Grant, Lexington, KY, Evan, Meredith, Jordan, David all of Albuquerque; and one great grandson Caz, Dallas, TX.

Lee was born December 22, 1942, in Pueblo, Colorado. At a young age he moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico and then to Grants, New Mexico for his high school years.

Lee joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 1962. After six months of active duty, Lee enrolled in the College of Engineering at UNM. After graduation as a Civil Engineer, Lee passed the Professional Engineers Exam.

For nearly fifty years Lee developed and ran six successful utility construction companies. He loved his work. The bigger the problem, the more he enjoyed it. Lee was a founding member of the New Mexico branch of the National Utility Contractors Association. He was the first president of the state organization and a vice president of the national organization.

His favorite passions were fishing and shooting craps. He was very good at both. Summers were spent on the lake and winters on the ski slopes.

Lee’s family was his greatest joy. He was so proud of every single one.

Lee will be laid to rest during a private burial. His Life Celebration will take place at a later date. Details are to be announced.

We would like to send our heartfelt thanks to the loving caregivers at Fountain Hill and the staff of Road Runner Hospice for their wonderful care.
