It’s with heavy hearts we announce the passing of James Stephen Sweeney. On Wednesday,

June 28, 2023, James, a lifelong resident of Albuquerqu­e, passed away quietly in his sleep, he was 59.

James was born in Albuquerqu­e and attended Manzano and Albuquerqu­e High School. Where he was an extraordin­ary basketball player, earning several awards including Most Valuable Player in the North-South High School Basketball Tournament. James received a basketball scholarshi­p to New Mexico Highlands University where he graduated with a degree in Management.

James started his career in Procuremen­t/ Planning/ Logistics after graduation at Honeywell Defense Avionics Division in Albuquerqu­e. He later worked for Intel in Rio Rancho and later Western Refining in Gallup.

He most recently worked in the residentia­l solar industry. Assisting homeowners in obtaining solar panels for their homes. James was passionate about the solar industry and its positive benefits for the environmen­t.

James deeply loved his children and family. He enjoyed life and made many friends along the way. He enjoyed playing golf and traveling. James will be deeply missed; he left an indelible warmth with all that knew him.

James is survived by his parents, Ambassador James and Betty Sweeney; his children, Chandler and Vanessa; his sister, Rhonda and her husband, Wayne Davis; brother, Donald; his sister, Joann who preceded him in death; and nephews, Anthony (his wife, Danielle) Phillip (his wife, Madeleine); and a great-niece, Sophie.
