Embracing electric vehicles puts NM at the forefront
Record temperatures and the extreme weather we are experiencing in New Mexico and across the country dominate the news cycle. Here in Albuquerque, we are stuck in a dangerous heat wave and avoiding the outdoors whenever possible. Last summer was New Mexico’s worst wildfire season to date and this year is predicted to be hotter and drier than previous summers. To top it off, climate scientists are warning that subsequent summers are going to be hotter and drier, meaning this dangerously hot summer may be the “coolest” summer for the rest of our lives.
New Mexico is at a critical juncture in addressing climate change. We need to use every tool in the toolbox to move as quickly as possible to reduce the pollution causing this harm to our environment. Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s administration has proposed adoption of the Advanced Clean Cars and Clean Trucks Rules, which would require more electric vehicles and zero-emissions cars and trucks be available for purchase in our state, thereby reducing pollution from the transportation sector, the second greatest source of greenhouse gas emissions in NM.
The Advanced Clean Cars and Clean Trucks Rules would also have a positive impact on communities most affected by harmful pollution from vehicles. Those living in close proximity to major roads and highways, predominantly low-income and communities of color, bear the brunt of this pollution. For decades, these marginalized communities have shouldered the burden of poor air quality, which exacerbates existing health disparities and contributes to a cycle of environmental injustice.
By utilizing funding from the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill and adopting the Advanced Clean Cars and Clean Trucks Rules, New Mexico can be a leader in addressing climate pollution from the transportation sector. Establishing stricter emission standards for new vehicles and fast-tracking the transition to cleaner and more efficient technologies will reduce harmful pollutants and encourage innovation and investment in the EV sector, leading to job creation and economic growth.
As a state rich in renewable energy resources like solar and wind, New Mexico has the potential to become a leader in clean transportation. Embracing EVs positions us at the forefront of the green energy revolution.
We currently have more than 130 charging stations across New Mexico. Gov. Lujan Grisham’s administration has a plan to build charging stations at least every 50 miles on every interstate and highway, ensuring that drivers can get from Deming to Raton anxiety-free.
As a nation, we successfully shifted from horse and buggy to the automobile. With a concerted effort and adequate funding there’s no reason we can’t or shouldn’t move swiftly to usher in the next change and make it easier for every New Mexican to have better options when purchasing a new vehicle.
We need to do everything we can to reduce our impacts on climate change. The best time to address climate change pollution was decades ago. The second best time is right now.
