New Mexico guard Aniyah Augmon on Monday was named the Mountain West Conference women’s Player of the Week after playing a starring role in the Lobos’ homecourt victory over Wyoming and their stunning upset of UNLV on the road.

Augmon, a junior from San Jose, California, averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 steals, 4 assists, leading UNM in all three categories in last week’s two victories. Her 5.5 rebounds per game ranked second on the team.

It’s Augmon’s first Mountain West Player of the Week honor.

In the victory over Wyoming on Wednesday, Augmon scored a career-high 22 points and had five steals. Nine of her points came in the fourth quarter as the Lobos overcame a 13-point third-quarter deficit to win by seven.

In Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, the Lobos (13-6, 4-2 Mountain West) shocked not just the Rebels, but the Mountain West with a 69-66 victory over a UNLV team that entered the game with a 15-1 record and 23 consecutive regular-season victories over conference opponents.

The Lobos trailed 36-30 at halftime, but Augmon and sophomore guard Viané Cumber helped UNM narrow the margin to a single point after three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Augmon assisted on a Cumber 3-pointer that put the Lobos ahead, 57-55, for the first time. A bit later, an Augmon layup gave UNM a 59-57 lead.

Then, in the final 2 minutes, 24 seconds, an Augmon 3-point play and her assist on Cumber’s game-winning 3-pointer gave the Lobos a memorable victory.

For the season, Augmon is averaging 12.4 points per game, second on the team behind backcourt running made Nyah Wilson’s 13.3, and leads the team with averages of 4.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game.

Augmon’s Player of the Week award is UNM’s second of the season. Center Charlotte Kohl was honored after her 14-point, 20-rebound performance in a victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Nov. 15.

The Lobos’ Paris Lauro was named the MW Freshman of the Week on Dec. 26.
