18-year-old man accused of shooting at Downtown crowd
Suspect tells police he purchased firearm from an app called Telegram
An 18-year-old man is accused of shooting into a Downtown Albuquerque crowd early Sunday morning, injuring two people.
Albuquerque Police Department spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said one person was taken to a local hospital while another was grazed and refused medical treatment.
Zane Katzenberger is being charged with two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a firearm and unlawful carrying of a firearm.
Katzenberger is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center. It is unknown if he has an attorney.
At about 1:20 a.m., the Albuquerque Police Department responded to a Shot Spotter activation on Central and Third.
After they arrived, an officer said they heard a shot in the area of Fourth and Central and saw people running east on Central, according to a criminal complaint filed in Metropolitan Court.
The complaint states one of those people was a man — later identified as Katzenberger — who had a handgun in his waistband with one 9mm round in the chamber.
Katzenberger told police he was intoxicated and did not know who he got the firearm from before telling police he bought it from someone off an app called Telegram, the complaint states.
According to police, APD received a video showing “what appeared to be” Katzenberger shooting a firearm at multiple people in a crowd before running.
The complaint states another man told police he was talking to someone when he heard two subjects get into a fight. He told police after the other two people shook hands and parted ways, he heard a commotion then “felt a sharp pain in his leg,” according to police.
