AT BOOKWORKS

Famed writer and free-speech advocate Salman Rushdie discusses his new memoir “Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, in a prerecorded virtual event on Vimeo at Bookworks.

Rushdie will be in conversation with author Suleika Jaouad about Rushdie’s new book, which is a detailed account of surviving an attempt on his life on Aug. 12, 2022. The attempt came years after a fatwa was ordered against him because his book “The Satanic Verses” was considered to have blasphemed Islam.

The event also features a question-and-answer session with the audience and closing comments from PEN America. It is a ticketed event. Go to the website bkwrks.com to purchase tickets. Each ticket includes a hardcover copy of “Knife” and the opportunity to buy Jaouad’s book “Between Two Kingdoms.”

Alex Kershaw will read from and sign his book “Against All Odds: True Story of Ultimate Courage and Survival in World War II” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 17.

The book focuses on the bloody Allied push against the Nazis in North Africa and in Europe as seen through the eye of four indefatigable American soldiers — Maurice Britt, Michael Daly, Keith Ware and Audie Murphy. For their heroism the four received the Congressional Medal of Honor. Murphy was often called the most decorated American combat soldier in the war. He later became a film actor. In 1955 he starred in the autobiographical film “To Hell and Back.”

Kershaw’s 2012 book “The Liberator” is a four-part series on Netflix.

Bookworks is located at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW.
