ALFA ROMEO GTA SPRINT BACK TO 1965

- Sascha Mallinckrodt

Last season Alfa Romeo returned to compete in the Formula 1 championship after decades of being away. The House of the Biscione has restarted a racing tradition, which it had initiated in the middle of the 20th century and which made its models icons of class, elegance and obviously speed. One of the cars that most embodies the sporting spirit of Alfa Romeo is undoubtedly the Giulia GTA Sprint (originated from the Giulia sedan), a car that was presented at the Amsterdam Motor Show in 1965 and which competed in the European Tourism Championship (organized by the FIA, the International Automobile Federation). The Giulia GTA Sprint became the queen of competitions in 1966. In that season alone the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTA, driven by official and private drivers, attained over 200 victories, substantiating its unbeatable class. The success of the GTA Sprint is also acknowledged overseas: countless are the affirmations reached by the first victories in championships in the USA and South America. Andrea de Adamich (in 1966 and ‘67) and Spartaco Dini (in 1969) won the European Touring Car Challenge three times, while Ignazio Giunti won the European Mountain Championship in 1967.

History that comes from a distant and unrepeatable era, but that remains embodied in the models that were main characters in those seasons. Just one of those models was recently put up for auction and it is one of the 40 models in their original version. A collector’s car and a price within reach of few: 360 thousand euros. Going into more detail Alfaholics (a company specializing in the sale of cars of the brand) has auctioned a 1965 GTA Stradale with all original parts, as if it had just left the factory. A car that is part of the 200 examples produced in the first series dated 1965 and that has marked a generation and more than a car, the symbol of an era.
