Even with little downtime between major sales, the Scottsdale Art Auction already has a number of top-quality works lined up for its annual sale, this year taking place on April 7 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Morris says the offered works are vetted thoroughly by the three partners to ensure that auction clients are seeing the best works and works that are fresh to the market.“michael and Brad and I have conference calls and we look at every single piece we’re considering. These calls typically last two or three hours, but as we get down to the sale they can last as long as five hours,” Morris says.“we’re a selective with the work because we want the quality to be as high as possible.”
Highlights in the year’s sale include William Herbert “Buck” Dunton’s Going In,the Bear Hunters, which is estimated at $200,000 to $300,000. Dunton, himself an avid sportsmen and hunter, was likely informed by the piece by his own life and adventures. The piece will join works from other founders of the Taos Society of Artists, including Joseph Henry Sharp’s portrait of a Native American White Weasel Taos Scout, estimated at $40,000 to $60,000.“While thetaos market has certainly softened since the recession in 2008, it’s regained much of its strength,” Morris says.“we have three from Bert Geer Phillips,
