Avid collectors of California and American art will be treated to an array of iconic scenes and rare imagery from some of the nation’s leading artists during John Moran Auctioneers’ March 27 California and American Fine Art Auction. Throughout the approximately 200 lots, pieces from names such as Sydney M. Laurence, Granville Redmond, Christian Siemer, Edgar Alwin Payne, wilson Irvine and Louis Moeller will cross the block.
“Our top lot is the Granville Redmond estimated at $100,000 to $200,000,” says Morgana Blackwelder, director of fine art at the auction house.“it’s one of the pieces that really plants itself as the headliner because it’s what people expect when they see of traditional California art—california poppies.” A California landscape by William Wendt titled Shadows (est. $20/30,000) also comes to market, as do two Socal scenes by Siemer that hung in the Hotel Laguna in Laguna Beach.the works, Los Angeles (San Pedro) Harbor, California and a painting of Exposition Park, carry presale estimates of $10,000 to $15,000 each.
Payne is represented in the sale by the European painting Loche, France, which is expected to sell between $30,000 and $40,000.The work, inspired by one of the artist’s trips to the area in the 1920s, is atypical of the subject matter he is known for, but is hallmarked with his brushwork and color. Blackwelder elaborates,“this architectural piece is really fun and nice to see. He’s still using his brushstrokes and the deep coral color palette.”
