Great Falls, Montana, for its 50th auction. The city rolls out the red carpet for Western art fans and collectors during Western Art Week, though many call it Russell Week, in mid March to mark the occasion of Russell’s March 19 birthday. And even though it’s been nearly a century since the artist’s passing, Russell permeates throughout Great Falls.“let me put it this way,” says Duane Braaten, director of art and philanthropy at the C.M. Russell Museum,“i went to C.M. Russell Elementary School and C.M. Russell High School.”
Braaten continues,“great Falls is incredibly proud of Charlie Russell and we all roll out the red carpet to welcome guests and artists who were inspired by his legacy to come to Montana and the place he called home,” he says.“he’s such a huge part of the Great Falls story, and the story of the West.we’re honored we get to celebrate him every year.”
The Russell features a wide variety of events, including curated booths from living Western artists, a fashion show, art demonstrations and a symposium, which this year ties into a summer museum exhibition titled Charles M. Russell:the Women in His Life and Art. The main event for many, though, is the live auction on the final night, which always features a choice selection of Russell works. Included in this year’s Russell offerings is Buffalo Hunt [No. 7], an oil from 1895.The work, estimated at $1.25 million to $1.75 million, features Russell’s most iconic and persistent images of a Native American figure on horseback chasing down a buffalo.
