Trump hypes ‘America First’ in UN speech

-

It was another case of offering a position in the wrong place at the wrong time. President Donald J. Trump on Tuesday, strongly promoted his only-partially-supported stance that the United States should be devoted to his cry for “America first.”

Trouble is, he was speaking to delegates of the United Nations General Assembly, a worldwide organization formed in 1948 by a multitude of the planet’s countries to provide peace and togetherness among the sovereign locales.

Reading from a prepared speech on a teleprompter, Trump declared, “Like my beloved country, each nation represented in this hall, has a cherished history, culture and heritage, that is worth defending and celebrating, and which gives us our singular potential and strength.

The free world must embrace its national foundations. It must not attempt to erase them or replace them. The future doesn’t belong to globalists. The future belongs to patriots.”

Tuesday’s statement marked the third year consecutive year that Trump espoused an “America first” position, the populist message he pledged to embrace on the 2016 campaign trail that helped fuel his victory.

“The future belongs to sovereign and independent nations, who protect their citizens, respect their neighbors and honor the difference that makes each country special and unique,” he told a mostly quiet audience. There was no clapping or standing ovation during the address.

Within a few hours after his speech, news outlets were reporting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was planning to put a resolution on the House floor Wednesday, to address the Ukraine scandal, amid growing calls to start the impeachment process against President Trump, according to sources.

The scandal involves a whistleblower’s account of a July 25 phone call between Trump and the Ukraine president, Volodymyr Zelensky, in which the U.S. president claims Democrat and former vice president Joe Biden threatened Ukraine to aid his son’s business interest. The facts suggest otherwise.

Trump, at least eight times, attempted to coerce Ukrainian leaders to investigate Biden and his son Hunter.

The U.S. president is said to have used the power of his office to attempt to influence a foreign country to meddle in the 2020 elections.

Pelosi is reportedly encouraging members of her caucus to state their impeachment positions now in order to show there is a groundswell among the Democrats. There were reports on Tuesday that Trump said he will release a transcript of the telephone call.

This story is far from over.
