Rebels’ golf shoots under 200

-

PALMDALE — After shooting 200 in two straight matches last week, the Quartz Hill girls golf team went lower in a Golden League match at Desert Aire Golf Course on Thursday.

The Rebels shot 195, followed by Littlerock (278), Eastside (327) and Lancaster (340).

“It feels amazing,” Quartz Hill senior Madison Schafer said. “We all shot 223 our first league match, so to see all of our progression is amazing.”

Schafer and freshman teammate Kylie Warner led the field of golfers by both shooting 36, on a par-35 nine-hole course. It was a career low score for Schafer.

“I felt pretty good,” Schafer said. “This is the lowest round that I’ve ever played and it feels great. My shots were pretty consistent and I missed an eagle putt on No. 1 from a few inches away.”

It was Warner’s first time playing at Desert Aire and she wasn’t too pleased with her score, saying her second shots were the “weakest” part of her day.

“I feel that I could have done better,” Warner said. “I am not too happy with my score at all.”

Quartz Hill’s Taylor Waters shot 40, followed by Alysha DiJamco with a 41 and Eme Larsen with a 42.

Alayna Sweitzer led Littlerock, which was 2-1 in the match, with a 50, while Kira Kallioma led Eastside (1-2) with a 63 and Anabella Rodriguez led Lancaster (0-3) with a 66.

BORON — The California City girls volleyball team defeated Boron 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 in a High Desert League match on Thursday.

The Ravens were missing four players due to injury.

“I was happy with the way the girls played today,” Cal City coach Shane Moore said. “We have girls playing different positions and playing different roles than they’re used to, but they all did a really good job.

“I can’t ask for more from these girls, they’re doing a great job.”

Abbey Moore recorded 22 assists for the Ravens (17-9, 4-1 HDL), while Paige Blackmore posted nine kills and 11 digs and Tayte Jones added 32 digs and three aces.

Cal City plays at Rosamond on Tuesday in a match for sole possession of second place in league as they both have just one loss to Frazier Mountain.

Despite all of their injuries, the Ravens are on pace to their second-best season in school history.

“With the adversity they’ve faced, I’m pretty proud of them for that,” Shane Moore said.

Boron (5-14-1, 0-5) will play at Desert on Tuesday.
