PALMDALE — Starting today, residents can use the front door pick-up service at the Palmdale City Library to check out items from its collection on Saturdays in addition to its Monday through Friday hours.

“We are now happy to announce the expansion of those services to include Saturdays beginning [today],” library Director Robert Shupe said.

The Saturday expansion comes after a few months of experience under the new health order that has led to well-established procedures in place to manage outside contact, Shupe said.

“Although we are not yet open to walk-in services, we have been happy to provide phone reference and reader’s advisory services as well as online hold services since March so that patrons can still get their next good read,” Shupe said.

The staff is available from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from

10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

To make an appointment for pick-up, patrons will have to call the library to check out an item from the collection. Items that are placed on hold online can be picked up once the item is available and a staffer calls to schedule an appointment for pick-up.

The library’s network with 80 other libraries is up and running again, Shupe said. Patron’s can now request an item from another library and it will be transferred to the library for pick-up.

Additionally, the library provides free Wi-Fi with no password from 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

“And don’t forget the hundreds of thousands of items available in e-content that is available through the library,” Shupe said.

The library’s e-content includes downloadable and streamable movies, a free music service, and Mango Languages, a program patrons can use to learn up to 70 different languages.

For those about to return to school, the library offers an online tutoring service where students can online chat with a tutor.

All items in the collection are available to anyone with a library card. All expiration dates for library cards have been extended to Aug. 16. Anyone who does not have a library card can obtain a temporary card online.
