-

Val is a nine-month old, black, female Labrador retriever mix that was brought to the Palmdale Animal Care Center as a stray found on 2nd St East in Palmdale. Val sat at the gate waiting to be collared to exit her kennel. As the runner knelt down and verbally coaxed her, she approached the fence with a low body and soft eyes. As she lingered at the gate, the runner placed his leash around her neck. Once leashed, she became slightly wary. The runner knelt and continued to verbally coax her. She then slowly walked out of the kennel. She will need training with leash walking. At the catch pen, she became very uncertain of her surroundings. She initially did not approach the fence and avoided eye contact with the other dogs. When the runner knelt and called her over, she submissively laid down and crawled over to the runner’s legs. The runner was able to place a collar around her neck with no issue. When she entered the yard, she walked over to a corner with a low body. She sat down and surveyed the yard. She sat in the corner a few minutes as she started acclimating to the yard. She then walked on the outskirt of the yard. She tolerated a male shepherd trailing her and lingering around her face without issue. She turned to face him and sniff his body. A handler called her over and she approached with a low body and soft eyes. She sat by the runner’s feet wanting affection. She remained by the handler’s side for the duration of her yard time. She requires time to acclimate to her surroundings. She did not display a play style. Val is recommended in a home with middle school-aged children and does well with calm dogs. It is also recommended she go to a home with no cats. To meet her, visit the center during its public hours of 2 to 5 p.m. daily and 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays.
