WHITTIER — The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team fought for two extra periods, finally overcoming Rio Hondo College 10193 in double overtime on Wednesday in Whittier.

“It was a weird night, but at least we got a Christmas present,” AVC coach John Taylor said.

The Marauders trailed 32-29 at halftime, but had a strong start to the second half. The two teams traded turnovers and points from there. AVC committed 27 turnovers while Rio Hondo had 20 turnovers.

The Marauders went 35-for-53 in free throws, but recorded a season-high 14 blocks and 13 steals to make up for it.

In the second overtime period, Rio Hondo had five players foul out and AVC capitalized.

“Second OT, we really got to them,” Taylor said. “We were deep in their bench and we still had our legs.”

The Marauders had five players score in double figures — three of them off the bench.

Malachi Jones led AVC off the bench with 21 points and seven rebounds, Josh Montiano followed with 15 points, four assists and three rebounds and Xa Landry scored 14 points with three steals and five rebounds.

Off the bench, Malik Larane recorded 14 points, a team-high 12 rebounds and a team-high six assists with three blocks and four steals. Tre
