Highland baseball blanks Canyon, 8-0

PALMDALE — The Highland baseball team defeated Canyon 8-0 in a nonleague game Wednesday at Highland High School.

Three Highland pitchers combined for the shutout, including senior Cesar Casas, who got the win by throwing four shutout innings and giving up two hits.

Highland senior Jacob Badillo gave up two hits in two innings and sophomore Colton Booterbaug­h struck out three and did not give up a hit in one shutout inning.

Highland senior Caleb Montemayor led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a run and two RBIs, Casas was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Badillo was 1-for-2 with two runs scored, senior Carlos Toro finished 1-for-4 and freshman Nick Gonzalez was 1-for-3.

BAKERSFIEL­D — The Paraclete softball team swept a doublehead­er against Garces Memorial last Saturday.

The Spirits won the first game 13-0 in six innings, and posted another shutout, 9-0 in the second game.

Paraclete’s Sydney Scripter pitched the first game, allowing just two hits and striking out eight.

“She pitched a very effective game,” Paraclete coach Margaret Neill said.

Scripter was also 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, while Taylor Day finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Addi Vandecar was 4-for-5 with two runs and Jamie Sencion also hit a home run.

Sencion pitched the second game, earning the victory after allowing just two hits and striking out 14. She also helped herself out at the plate, finishing with two hits and three RBIs.

“Both pitchers did a really nice job,” Neill said.

Shaylee Scripter also picked up two hits and an RBI for the Spirits.

“I was really pleased with the way we played,” Neill said. “We played really good defense.”

Paraclete (7-1, 0-1 CRL), which lost its Camino Real League opener on Tuesday, plays its second league game today against St. Anthony at Marie Kerr Park.

Swimming Girls: QHHS 85, Hart 85 Boys: QHHS 110, Hart 60

SANTA CLARITA — The Quartz Hill girls swim team tied with Hart, 85-85, last Friday at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, while the Quartz Hill boys won 110-60.

“It was a really good first meet of the season,” QH coach Brian Reed said. “Going against a quality opponent like Hart gives us a really good idea of where we are at the beginning of the year. We have a lot of young swimmers playing big roles on the team this year. If this is just the start of the season, it should be a really fun season at the end of the year.”

The Royals’ girls team, which is in CIF-Southern Section Division 3, took first place in 8-of-11 events against the Division 1 Indians.

Bethany Burga led the girls team with four victories — two relays and two individual events. Burga, a junior, teamed up with three freshmen — Anya Juliano, Magnolia Ahking and Bailey Nickols — to win the 200-yard medley relay with a CIF Division 3 automatic qualifying time of one minute, 55.80 seconds and the 400yard freestyle relay with another automatic time of 3:48.02.

Burga also won the 500-yard freestyle with an automatic time of 5:18.10 and the 100-yard backstroke with a considerat­ion time of 1:03.82.

Nickols won the 200-yard freestyle with an automatic time of 2:00.14 and took second in the 100-yard freestyle with another automatic qualifying time of 54.58 seconds.

Ahking posted a considerat­ion time of 2:26.57 to win the 200-yard Individual Medley (IM). She also won the 100-yard butterfly with a considerat­ion time of 1:03.06.

Isabelle Drossel took third in the 50yard freestyle with a considerat­ion time of 26.66 and was also third in the 100-yard freestyle with another considerat­ion time of 58.99.

Juliano posted a considerat­ion time of 1:15.47 in winning the 100-yard breaststro­ke.

The Quartz Hill boys were also victorious in 8-of-11 events.

Conner Alvarez won four events for the Royals, starting with the 200-yard medley relay with teammates Xander Martin, Ian Venegas Fiedler and Kristian Loza. The team posted an automatic qualifying time of 1:43.36.

Alvarez also posted a considerat­ion time of 52 seconds in winning the 100yard freestyle and also won the 100-yard breaststro­ke with a considerat­ion time of 1:02.15.

Alvarez, Venegas Fiedler, Loza and AJ Petho teamed up for the win in the 400yard freestyle relay, posting a considerat­ion time of 3:34.76.

Martin won the 200-yard IM with a considerat­ion time of 2:10.31 and took third in the 100-yard butterfly with another considerat­ion time of 58.78 seconds.

Martin, Chase Stanford, Dalton Bolyard and Petho also won the 200-yard freestyle relay together with a considerat­ion time of 1:38.02.

Petho also won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.13, while Venegas Fiedler won the 100yard butterfly with a considerat­ion time of 57.67.

Loza took second place in the 100-yard backstroke with a considerat­ion time of 1:01.56 and was also second in the 100yard freestyle with a considerat­ion time of 52.65.
