Paraclete wins two games in Drillers Tourney

-

PARACLETE — The Paraclete softball team picked up two very different wins in the Bakersfield Drillers Tournament on Friday.

The Spirits beat Ridgeview 12-0 in four innings before eking out a 2-1 victory over Liberty in final inning of the timed tournament game.

“It was a really good game,” Paraclete coach Margaret Neill said about the win over Liberty.

Neill added her team needed an intense, tight game and she was proud of how they responded with the win.

Paraclete scored on an RBI hit by Shaylee Scripter in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Liberty then homered in the top of fifth inning to tie the game at 1-1.

Addison Vandecar walked for the Spirits (11-2) in the bottom of the fifth inning, stole second base and went to third on a passed ball. Jamie Sencion then hit an infield single in the 5-6 hole and beat out the throw to first base, allowing Vandecar to score the winning run. Neill said Vandecar is one of two “very smart base runners” on the team, along with Carmen Sanchez.

Sencion also earned the victory in the circle, allowing the one run on three hits and striking out nine batters.

“It was a really well-pitched game,” Neill said.

In the first game, Paraclete pitcher Sydney Scripter picked up the win, allowing just one hit and striking out seven.

“She did well,” Neill said. “It was a very effective pitching performance for her.”

Sydney Scripter also went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs for the Spirits, while Mina Barriga finished 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Addi Gorman was 2-for3 with two runs and an RBI and Sanchez finished 2-for-2 with a run and three RBIs.
