Highland baseball holds off Knight in win

- VALLEY PRESS

PALMDALE — The Highland baseball team defeated Knight 6-3 in a Golden League game at Knight High on Friday.

Highland (7-2, 2-1) had a 6-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh against Knight (4-10, 2-2).

Knight junior Isaac Lopez was 1-for-4 with two RBIs, sophomore Jose Garcia was 1-for-3 with a run and freshman Jonathan Tiznado was 1-for-2 with two walks.

Knight co-coach Ryan Tarnoff said the Hawks had runners in scoring position in several innings, but couldn’t capitalize against the Highland starting pitcher, who reached the pitch count late in the game.

Knight had the tying run at the plate when the game ended.

Tarnoff said the Knight defense played an error-free game, but the pitching staff gave up nine walks and two hit batters.

“Too many freebees for a team that puts the ball in play,” Tarnoff said.

Highland finished with six hits, while the Knight pitchers finished with six strikeouts.

Knight will host Palmdale on Wednesday.

Boys Golf Quartz Hill defeats Palmdale, Littlerock and Highland

LLANO — The Quartz Hill boys golf team went 3-0 in a Golden League match on Thursday at Crystalaire Country Club. The Royals shot 218 to defeat Palmdale, Littlerock and Highland, despite tough conditions with winds gusting up to 25 to 30 mph.

“The season is young and the weather has not been optimal, but my boys are playing well,” Quartz Hill coach Dan Pratt said. “We have played some really good teams like Westlake, Hart, Calabasas and Oaks Christian, so far, and I’m happy with how the top eight players have been playing.”

Quartz Hill junior Tayden Ramos led the field with a 39 on a par 36 nine holes. Sophomore Jacob Verbanac followed with a 42, junior Kerrington Ambrose was third with a 44, freshman Alexander Delfin ended up fourth with a 45 and Littlerock sophomore DJ Burras finished fifth with a 46.

“It’s a great mix of boys with two new players Jacob and Alexander,” Pratt said. “They have been a great addition to the team that we have had for the last two seasons. I expect each of the varsity boys to perform to their potential midway through the season and, if they do that, it will be exciting to watch them play.”

Quartz Hill (6-0 GL) has three consecutive matches next week, starting with Valencia at Crystalaire on Tuesday, followed by West Ranch at Sand Canyon golf course on Wednesday and finishing with a Golden League match on Thursday at Antelope Valley Country Club.
