“I shipped 43 eggs by parcel post and when they got where I was sendin’ ‘em, ev’ry one was busted. Eggs is sellin’ at 30 cents. Le’s see, four times 12 is 48 — a dollar and 20 and — well, anyhow, it’s about $2 I’ve got comin’ to me ‘cause them eggs was busted in travelin’ and I want it.” And a woman who called on Postmaster U.S. Bratton yesterday added stress to her demands with a few physical as well as verbal calistheni­cs. “I want to send my dog by parcel post,” declared a portly gentleman during the afternoon. “Sorry, but nothing doing,” replied the clerk. “Bees and insects are the only animals that can be shipped by parcel post.” “None on my dog,” said the owner, and whirled through the revolving door. The usual “diversifie­d” shipments were received yesterday, including pipes from corncobs to meerschaum, several overcoats and other wearing apparel, some lettuce and a package of cotton.

Perry County Rep. Paul Van Dalsem today began a filibuster against an effort to remove a literacy test from his voter-registrati­on bill. Pulaski County Rep. Jim Brandon succeeded in having the measure placed on second reading for amendment in what is called the “morning hour.”

Feb. 7, 1988

The special master for juvenile justice in Pulaski County Circuit Court estimated 75 percent of the juveniles assigned to her court are released because there is no place to put them. Vicki Sandage presented a proposal Saturday morning for a county juvenile detention center to a Pulaski County Quorum Court subcommitt­ee. Ms. Sandage proposes to reopen the 16-cell detention area previously used for similar purposes but closed in 1982 for financial reasons.

A portion of a Little Rock street has been renamed in honor of philanthro­pist and businessma­n Jack Stephens. On Tuesday night, the Little Rock Board of Directors voted unanimousl­y to rename a portion of South Elm Street to Jack Stephens Drive. The name change, which affects the street between West Markham to West Seventh streets, was requested by the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
