FORT SMITH — The public schools at DeQueen have suspended for the year because the School Board is without funds to pay the teachers. For several months the teachers have been compelled to discount their warrants, owing to the lack of school funds, and recently the bank that has been accepting their warrants announced it would be forced to decline the vouchers in the future. The teachers yesterday decided to quit work unless they received assurances of their salaries.

Gov. Faubus today “welcomed” a proposed audit of the State Police Department, which is curtailing activities due to a shortage of funds. Rep. Norman Wimpy of Craighead County yesterday suggested such an audit to determine the needs of the department and see what could be done to help it. The governor, reading this in newspapers, in north Arkansas where he is resting, telephoned his office this morning and issued a dictated press release.

Little Rock radio station KARN-AM, 920, had some fun with its listeners Friday when it pulled an April Fools’ joke about talk show host Pat Lynch. Lynch was replaced during the last hour of his show and the station began running announcements every 30 minutes apologizing for “unfortunate remarks made on this morning’s Pat Lynch Show.” The announcement was read by a man who said he was the station’s general manager, Neal Gladner. The announcement also said “there is no room at KARN for such verbal indiscretions” on the air and that measures had been taken to assure that such an occurrence would not be repeated. After thousands of callers telephoned the station asking what had happened to Lynch, KARN read an announcement at 5:06 p.m. saying it was all an April Fools’ hoax and that Lynch would return to the air Monday.

After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned that the smallpox vaccine could cause heart-related problems, the Arkansas Department of Health temporarily suspended its vaccination program Tuesday. The possible link between the vaccine and heart problems surfaced last week when the CDC announced it was reviewing at least seven cases, including two deaths, of healthcare workers recently vaccinated who suffered heart attacks or chest pain.
