6 in state win Goldwater scholarships
Four Hendrix College students and two University of Arkansas at Fayetteville students have been awarded the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for the 2013-2014 academic year, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation announced Monday.
Nationwide, 271 Goldwater Scholars, all sophomores and juniors, were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,107 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.
The one- and two-year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year, the foundation said.
At Hendrix College, newly announced Goldwater Scholars are Kaleigh Clary, a junior computer science and math major from Cabot who wants to pursue a doctorate in computer science; Vincent Gammill, a junior physics major from Little Rock who wants to complete a doctorate in physics and teach at a university level; Konstantin Gruenwald, a sophomore physics major from Little Rock who wants to pursue a doctorate in applied optics; and Macrina Butler, a junior biochemistry and molecular biology major from Austin, Texas, who wants to pursue a doctorate in physiology.
At the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, newly announced Goldwater Scholars are juniors Mathias Bellaiche, a Fayetteville biophysics and biophysical chemistry major who wants to pursue a medical doctorate and a doctorate in systems biology, and Tobias Bothwell, an Oklahoma City physics and mathematics major who wants to complete a doctorate in physics.
