MAX E. BRYANT, 84, of Little Rock died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, at Baptist Health Medical Center. He was born in New Edinburg, Ark., on Oct. 21, 1928, to the late Montie Bryant and Allie Tipton Bryant. Max enjoyed his childhood in Jefferson and Cleveland counties. He graduated from high school in New Edinburg. He later attended and earned his degree from Ouachita Baptist University. During his career in finance, he was the business office manager for St. Vincent Infirmary in charge of billing, and also worked in area banks. An avid sports fan, Max enjoyed watching basketball and football, particular­ly the Arkansas Razorbacks. He was a longtime member of Toastmaste­rs, and attended Markham Street Baptist Church. Max was a United States Navy veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Lee Logan Bryant of Little Rock, to whom he was married on Sept. 6, 1953, in Greenville, Miss.; his son, Rodney Bryant and his wife, Leigh of Arlington, Texas; his daughters, Gail Lien and her husband, Dan, and Lisa Akridge, all of Little Rock; his grandchild­ren, Rebecca Bryant, Paul Bryant, Stephanie Akridge, Bradley Akridge and Tiffany Akridge; and a great-grandson, Charlie Jackson Bryant.

The family will receive friends at J. A. Funk Funeral Home on Sunday evening, Oct. 13, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 14, 2013, in the chapel of J. A. Funk Funeral Home with Brother Tom Strike officiatin­g.

Pallbearer­s will be Jeff Bryant, Mike Bryant, David Bryant, Steve Belin and Paul Bryant. Interment will follow in Rockport Cemetery with military honors provided by the United States Honor Guard.

––––– ––––– BERTIE MAE CASADY, 85, of North Little Rock passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013. She was a breast cancer survivor and retired from Chicopee with over 40 years. She volunteere­d for the Red Cross and enjoyed yard work and gardening.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William “Bill” Casady; daughter, Theresa Crowder; four grandchild­ren, Brigitt Zurga and husband, Robert “Griff” Griffin, Blake Crowder and wife, Heather, JoAnna Hackley and husband, Shawn and Adam Crowder; eight great-grandchild­ren, Kayla Zurga, Buck Zurga, Hope Crowder, Haleigh Crowder, Joseph Hackley, Emma Hackley, Jaxon Crowder and Mazie Crowder. Janice was a goodhearte­d, hard worker and dearly loved by her family. She was a loving aunt, wonderful with people and great in sales. She was preceded in death by her grandfathe­r, Bennie Lawhon and an uncle, Johnny Lawhon.

––––– ––––– On Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013, DORIS GIFFORD walked into the waiting arms of her beloved soul-mate, Ted Gifford, to begin their dance in eternity. No more sorrow, only praises with the angels and heavens’ chorus. She was born on Oct. 20, 1938, in Little Rock, Ark., to Otis Lee Spann and Virgie Lee Knight Spann, both preceding her in death. Also preceding her to glory was one brother, Jimmy Lee Spann of the San Diego Area of California. Her husband of 51 years, Theodore Allen Gifford, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 17, 2009.

She is survived by one brother, Larry Spann (Susie) of Bismarck and one sister, Patricia Peters, of Bryant, Ark. Closest to her was her care-giver and eldest daughter, Joanna Gifford. She moved in with Joanna and looked forward to their annual outing to see Celtic Thunder each year to hear “her boys” singing both traditiona­l, as well as contempora­ry songs of Ireland, dreaming of one day seeing and walking the land of Erie. ––––– ––––– Mrs. SUZANNE VACCARO HARDEMAN, age 76, of Little Rock, Ark., former resident of Forrest City, died Aug. 8, 2013, in Little Rock.

Mrs. Hardeman was born Feb. 2, 1937, in Memphis, Tenn. She was the daughter of Leo and Frances Vaccaro. Mrs. Hardeman is survived by a son, Scott Johnson, and a brother, Jimmy Vaccaro.

––––– ––––– JOHN JOE HOWLETT SR., age 76, of Little Rock, formerly of Monticello, passed away Thursday, Oct. 10, 2013 at his home in Little Rock. Born Dec. 23, 1936 he was the son of the late Byron P. Howlett Sr. and Martha Howlett Howlett.

He was a retired special agent with the United States Secret Service, a United States Coast Guard Veteran and was a Baptist. He enjoyed his retirement just doing as he pleased. He was an avid hunter and cherished spending time with his family. John Joe was a loving husband, father, grandfathe­r and friend.

His survivors include his wife of 50 years, Betty Lou Miller Howlett of Little Rock; two sons, John Howlett Jr. and wife, Stephanie of Hensley and Lew Howlett and wife, Karen of Greenbrier; his daughter, Kathy Mayo of Conway; one brother, Byron P. ––––– ––––– EDNA FRANCES JONES, 88, of Little Rock, Ark., went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus, on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013.

Edna started to work with Gus Blass on a school work program in September of 1941 and continued her career in accounting with Dillard’s until her retirement in May 2006.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Jones, and parents, Edna and Edwin Parker. She is survived by her sister, Billie Bybee of Little Rock; cousin, Ralph Watson of Springfiel­d, Va.; and a family of beloved friends.

Edna was an avid Razorback fan and supporter of the Hogs. She enjoyed her volunteer work with the Diocese, Lung Associatio­n, election polls and Aldersgate.

Edna was a long-time member of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, where she loved her church family. Father John Connell, who was so very special to her, will celebrate her Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013, at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Pine Crest Memorial Park, with Tommy Williams, Lee Schwarzent­raub, Parker Parish, Kevin Pennington, David Robinson and Kyle Robinson serving as pallbearer­s. She was born Dec. 28, 1927 in Little Rock to C.L. and Vida Andrews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Robert Andrews; and her husband, C.W. Keopple Jr.

Ruth graduated from Little Rock High School. She was a devoted mother and the epitome of a coach’s wife. She supported her husband’s Hall High Warriors and served as the dorm mother for the Razorbacks during the Ken Hatfield years. Her greatest joy was her grandchild­ren who lovingly referred to her as “Bubba.”

She is survived by her children, Robbie Keopple, Karen Keopple (Jack Pearson) of Little Rock, Bill Keopple, wife Marsha of Texarkana, Ark.; two grandchild­ren, Landon Keopple, wife Dana of Magnolia, Ark., Brittany Fowler, husband Ryan of Diana, Texas; and by two great-grandchild­ren, Kinslee Keopple and Harper Fowler.

He was a member of Natural Steps Baptist Church, the Scottish Rite and a 32nd Degree Mason who was a perpetual member of Roland Lodge 508. He enjoyed woodworkin­g as a hobby. From swings, jewelry boxes, banks, and many other treasured items; “Created by God, built by George Moreland.” One of his greatest passions was when turkey and deer season came around. At age 79, he killed his heaviest turkey — 25 pounds.

Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmothe­r, daughter, sister, and friend. She worked for the U.S. Department of Agricultur­e and retired after 40 years of service. She was a long-time member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where she held numerous leadership positions in her women’s group and Sunday School class and formed many lifetime friendship­s. She loved spending time with her grandsons and supporting all of their endeavors.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Richard “Bo” Peters, and her parents, Alford Brown and Velda Brown Simoneau. MERCER JANET HOPSON TATE, 91, of Little Rock passed away at her home early Friday, Oct. 11, 2013. Born May 12, 1922, in Fulton, Ark., Janet was the daughter of the late Dora Dean Adams and Mercer J. Hopson. She graduated in 1940 from Fulton High School, and later moved to Little Rock as a young woman to attend Little Rock Junior College, where she received an associate’s degree in business. Soon after, she started her career with Southweste­rn Bell Telephone Company and later AT&T, where she worked for 42 years, much of that time as a supervisor and comptrolle­r in the accounting department. In August of 1948, she married J.L. Tate, who was her soulmate for over 62 years, until his death in 2011. Janet was a devoted wife and loving mother who surrounded herself with many friends. Her drive to succeed in all facets of life was and is an inspiratio­n to her family. She was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church, where, for a number of years, she volunteere­d in the Vaught Media Ministry. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Naomi Palmer and Clairette Garrett; and a son, Col. Stephen M. Tate, whose widow, Rebecca Curtis Tate, lives in Dayton, Ohio. Survivors include two sons, Byron Tate and his wife, Pat Smith Tate, of Pine Bluff, and Galen Tate of Bridgeport, Conn.; and three grandchild­ren, Nathan Tate, Mary Kathryn Tate and Ethan Tate, all of New York City.

He graduated from North Little Rock High School in 1946 and joined the U.S. Marine Corp. After serving his country for three years, he began his career at Southweste­rn Bell Telephone as a switchman. After 40 years, and several promotions, he retired as an area manager in industry relations. During his tenure, he was chosen to serve as metro director for the National Alliance of Businessme­n (NAB). The NAB was a national joint business-government venture to hire and train disadvanta­ged people for productive jobs. In that role, he was responsibl­e for securing cooperatio­n from business and industry. After retirement, he and his wife, Victoria, spent many fun-filled years in St Louis, where they cheered on their favorite teams, the Rams, Cardinals and Razorbacks, and enjoyed the local culture including the Gateway Men’s Chorus, the Fox Theatre and the Gateway Miata Club before returning home to North Little Rock to be close to family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Edwin Woods and Gladys Cantrell Woods Holland; and Ramona Woods, the mother of his children.

Ben (known as BB to his grandchild­ren) is survived by his wife of 30 years, Victoria Chandler Woods of Sherwood, and his brother, Edwin P Woods Jr. (Melba) of Tampa, Fla. Also surviving are his children, Mona Burris (Darren) and Jerry Woods, both of Sherwood; granddaugh­ter, Sara Lemoir (Mark) of Bristol, England; grandson, Geno Jameson of Sherwood; three great-grandsons, Jacob, Ethan and Connor Lemoir of Bristol, England, and many adoring nieces and nephews.

Oates Jr. of Perry, Ark., died on Oct. 5, 2013. Oran O. Oates Jr. was better known by his nickname “Tootie.” He was born in Morrilton, Ark., on Jan. 20, 1948, to the late Oran O. He attended Perry Elementary School and graduated from Perryville High School in 1965. He joined the Navy in 1969 and served on the destroyer The USS Hugh Purvis and was active during the Vietnam War. Following his Honorable Discharge, “Tootie” worked in many different fields of work until his retirement.
