Hendrix comes up short

Freshman wide receiver Spencer Smith’s 34-yard reception as time expired came up just inches from the goal line Saturday as Hendrix College lost 45-41 to Washington University at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium in Conway.

The Warriors (2-3) went to the end zone from the Bears’ (4-2) 35-yard line with 3.4 seconds remaining as Tanner Frye threw to the 6-4 Smith who came down with the ball but was denied the end zone by Andrew Skalman.

Washington scored with 51.7 seconds left in the fourth quarter after a 10-play, 70-yard drive was capped by a 17-yard touchdown pass from Eric Daginella to Zach Strittmatt­er.

Dayton Winn had 20 carries for 99 yards and 2 touchdowns rushing for the Warriors. Seth Peters went 19-of-25 passing for 232 yards and 1 touchdown before leaving with an injury midway through the fourth quarter. Frye was 7-of-9 for 84 yards. McMahon had eight catches for 92 yards, while Smith had a season-best six receptions for 99 yards.

Caleb Shannon led the defense with 16 tackles for Hendrix. Gray Stanton had 10 tackles, three for a loss.

VOLLEYBALL

UCA downs Oral Roberts

Central Arkansas downed Oral Roberts 3-1 on Saturday in Conway. UCA (15-3, 7-0 SLC) was led offensivel­y by senior Kyle Hartman, who had a career-high 16 kills. Scout Brooks added 12 kills and Heather Schnars had 11 for the Sugar Bears.

Marissa Collins dished out a match-high 46 assists to go along with 9 digs and 2 aces for UCA, while Shelbee Berringer led the team with 21 digs.

Sara Pope led the Golden Eagles (13-4, 5-2 SLC), with 12 kills, while teammate Laura Taylor had 34 assists.

SAU splits tri-match

Southern Arkansas continued a non-conference road swing on Saturday as the Lady Muleriders split a tri-match against Francis Marion University and the University of Montevallo in Montevallo, Ala.

SAU (13-7) dropped the match against Francis Marion 3-0, and fell behind 2-0 against Montevallo, but rebounded to win the next three sets to earn the 3-2 victory.

Amanda Monge led the team with 23 kills in the two matches followed by Hailey McNee’s 21. Gabby Clark paced the offense with 79 of the team’s 85 assists. Ally Rodriguez led the team with 32 digs in the matches.

Golden Suns go 1-1

Arkansas Tech (13-8) split a pair of matches on Saturday, topping Missouri Southern and falling 3-0 to Washburn in the second day of the Missouri Southern State Invitation­al in Joplin.

The Golden Suns fell 25-19, 25-19, and 25-19 to Washburn as Emily Todd led the offense with 10 kills. Senior Amber Cerrillos led the offense with 30 assists, and sophomore Morgan McKellar led the defense with 21 digs. Sophomore Katie Huff added 10 kills. Tech topped Missouri Southern 25-21, 25-13, 25-20 in the second match. McKellar had 16 digs, while Cerrillos dished out 31 assists. Morgan Hatwig had three blocks.

UAFS sweeps road match

Arkansas-Fort Smith remained undefeated in Heartland Conference play on Saturday with a road sweep of Texas A&M Internatio­nal at the Kinesiolog­y and Convocatio­n Center in Laredo, Texas.

UAFS won 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 to extend its winning streak to six consecutiv­e matches. The Lady Lions (12-6, 9-0) have a two-game lead over Lubbock Christian (10-7, 7-2).

Michelle Walker led UAFS with 18 kills against TAMIU. Senior setter Stephanie Brock had 41 assists.

GOLF

Lavy moves up in N.C.

University of Arkansas senior Emma Lavy of Fayettevil­le fired a 4-under 68 for her best round of the season to move into a tie for 13th place Saturday in the second round of the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitation­al in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Lavy’s even-par 144 leads No. 3 Arkansas, which is in eighth place in the team standings.

Sophomore Regina Plasencia posted a 1-over 73 and is tied for for 22nd overall with sophomore Gabriela Lopez, who shot a 76.

Freshman Summar Roachell is tied for 66th with 152 shooting 77-75 and senior Emily Tubert is tied for 72nd with 153 with rounds of 78-75.

Seventh-ranked Duke leads the field, followed by No. 14 Alabama and No. 9 Oklahoma.

SWIMMING

UALR’s Trumbach breaks records in loss

UALR freshman Erin Trumbach broke school records in both the 100 and 200 breaststro­ke while the Trojans claimed three events in a 172-111 loss to Tulane on Saturday morning in New Orleans.

Trumbach’s first record came in the 100 breaststro­ke, finishing second with a time of 1:08.06. She eclipsed the record of Audra Stalzer (1:08.67). Trumbach then broke Merritt Lander’s 200 breaststro­ke mark by more than a second, touching the wall in 2:26.32 to finish second.

Individual victories came from senior Kara Raney in the 100 backstroke and sophomore Valeriya Teplova in the 100 freestyle. Raney defeated Elizabeth Cook from Tulane by 0.02 to win the event, finishing with a time of 59.36.
