Late rally provides Clemson a victory

CLEMSON, S.C. — Tajh Boyd and No. 3 Clemson needed a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Boston College 24-14 on Saturday and stay on course for the upcoming Atlantic Coast Conference showdown with Florida State.

Boyd’s 6-yard touchdown run with 13:44 remaining put the Tigers (6-0, 4-0) ahead for good and defensive end Vic Beasley sealed things with a 13-yard fumble recovery score to outlast the Eagles (3-3, 1-2).

The Tigers were out of sync offensivel­y most of the game and trailed 14-10 entering the final quarter. That’s when Boyd led the 48-yard drive that ended with his 6-yard rush into the end zone for a 17-14 lead.

When Boston College got the ball back, Chase Rettig fumbled when sacked by linebacker Tony Steward and Beasley was there to scoop up the ball and put the Tigers up 24-14.

Boyd also had a touchdown pass and finished with 334 yards passing to become the school’s all-time leader in passing yards, surpassing ex-Tiger Charlie Whitehurst.

It’s Clemson’s second 6-0 start in the past three years.

Houston tops Memphis

HOUSTON—JohnO’Korn threw for 198 yards and a touchdown and Kenneth Farrow ran for two second-half touchdowns as Houston overcame a slow start to defeat Memphis 25-15 Saturday and remain undefeated.

O’Korn finished 13 of 30 and Deontay Greenberry caught four passes for 76 yards for the Cougars (5-0, 2-0), who were out-gained 349 yards to 247.

Paxton Lynch was 21 of 41 for 222 yards passing, and Brandon Hayes rushed 12 times for 72 yards to lead the Tigers (1-4, 0-2), who committed four turnovers — all fumbles. Mose Frazier caught five passes for 81 yards.

Jake Elliot had five field goals for Memphis.

Trailing 15-10 midway through the third, Farrow put the Cougars ahead with a 1-yard run and followed that by taking O’Korn’s shovel pass in for a two-point conversion, capping a 7-play, 75-yard drive.

Connecticu­t (0-4, 0-1) 13-10 in East Hartford, Conn. CONFERENCE USA Tulane wins in 3OT NEW ORLEANS — Cairo Santos kicked five field goals, including a 42-yard game winner in overtime, to give Tulane a 36-33 victory over East Carolina.

Both teams matched each other with two overtime touchdowns, but East Carolina’s third possession drive stalled and the Pirates missed a 42-yard field goal, giving Tulane the opening it needed to send Santos in for the game-winning score when it took over the ball.

The Green Wave (5-2, 3-0) relied on Santos, and a 98yard intercepti­on return for a touchdown by Derrick Strozier, to keep the game close as East Carolina (4-2, 2-1) racked up 543 total yards of offense, including 480 yards passing and a touchdown by Shane Carden. East Carolina had a chance to take the lead with 3 seconds remaining in regulation, but Warren Harvey missed a 42-yard field goal to send the game into overtime.
