FRIDAY’S STARS

Jockey Shaun Bridgmohan moved to the top of the jockey standings with four winners: Culebrita ($7.40) in the third, Starter ($7.40) in the sixth, Kartune ($5.60) in the seventh and Electric Temptress ($6.20) in the eighth. Bridgmohan, who had three winners last Friday, has 10 through seven days of racing.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

Newcomers Robertino Diodoro and Chris Landeros combined for their first victories in the ninth race with Subtle Indian ($13.20). Diodoro was the leading trainer at Canterbury Park in Minnesota in 2014. It was Landeros’ first victory in 2015 but the 1,100th of his career. He won 82 races and more than $2.7 million in earnings last season after relocating to the Kentucky circuit after being one of the leading riders at Lone Star Park in recent years.

BOMBS AWAY

The fourth race produced the largest $2 win payoff of the young season when Springandaprayer, a 5-year-old gelding trained by Larry Frazee and ridden by Floyd Wethey Jr., overcame the No. 11 post to win the 5½-furlong race for $6,250 claimers by 2½ lengths at 63-1. Springandaprayer paid $128.20 to win, $46.20 to place and $17.40 to show. He combined with 4-1 shot Gentlemans Code to produce a $350.80 exacta on a $1 wager and a $2,020.10 trifecta payoff with La Jolla Beach in the third spot on base $.50 wagers. Those fortunate enough to have the $.10 superfecta, which included Ramblin Star in the fourth spot, collected $3,821.81. As 60-1 shots go, Springandaprayer came into the race in decent form after a fourth-place finish at Remington Park on Dec. 16. He was beaten 3 lengths that day, but was moving up to the tough $6,250 claiming ranks and was breaking from the 11 hole, which traditionally has not been kind to horses at the 5 ½-furlong distance.

CARRYOVER GONE

Just when it appeared as if Oaklawn Park’s six-day Classix carryover would go on for another day, favorites won two of the final three legs of the six-race wager and the end result was one ticket, sold off track, worth $63,107.80. The chances of the wager being hit seemed highly unlikely after 63-1 shot Springandaprayer won the fourth race, the second leg of the bet, followed by first-time starter American Kisses ($22.40) in the fifth. Springandaprayer was the 11th betting choice in the fourth race and American Kisses was the fifth betting choice in the fifth race, but the other winners were much more logical. Culebrita ($7.40) kicked off the six-race sequence as the second-betting choice. Long shots followed the next two races, but then came Starter ($7.40), the second-betting choice in the sixth, followed by favored Kartune and Electric Temptress in the seventh and eighth, and the Classix carryover was gone.

3 DAYS OFF

Jockey Israel Ocampo has been suspended three racing days by Oaklawn stewards because of an incident in the fourth race Jan. 17. During the period of suspension, Ocampo may ride in designated stakes races but then must serve a replacement day of suspension. Ocampo is named on both halves of Scott Becker- trained entry of St. Louis City and Win’em All in today’s $100,000 American Beauty Stakes for older filly and mare sprinters.

THE AMERICAN BEAUTY

Sugar Shock, who crossed the finish line first in all four of her Oaklawn Park starts in 2014, makes her 2015 debut in today’s $100,000 American Beauty Stakes for fillies and mares 4 years old and up at 6 furlongs. Sugar Shock has won 4 of 9 career starts with $398,130 in earnings, more than any other horse in the field. But Sugar Shock, a 4-yearold Kentucky-bred daughter by Candy Ride, hasn’t raced since June when she was pulled up in the Grade III Iowa Oaks on a sloppy track at Prairie Meadows. Sugar Shock started her 2014 season at Oaklawn. She broke her maiden and won an entry-level allowance race at 6 furlongs before stretching out to 1 1/16th miles in the Grade III Honeybee and Fantasy Stakes. She finished first in the Honeybee but was disqualified and placed second for interference in deep stretch. There were no such problems in the Fantasy Stakes, the biggest race for 3-year-old fillies in Hot Springs, when she went wire to wire under Channing Hill, who is named to ride today. Sugar Shock raced three more times in 2014, finishing eighth in the Grade I Kentucky Oaks, winning a $75,000 stake at Prairie Meadows before her season-ending effort in the Iowa Oaks. Sugar Shock, trained by Doug Anderson, is the 3-1 morning-line favorite against 12 other fillies and mares. Post time is scheduled for 4:38 p.m. Central.

FINAL FURLONG

The Oaklawn media relations department has provided updates on several of the 3-year-olds who competed in Monday’s $150,000 Smarty Jones Stakes. The winner, Far Right, is being pointed to either the Grade III Southwest Stakes or the Grade II Rebel Stakes on March 14. Third-place finisher Mr. Z, the Wayne Lukas- trainee who drifted out dramatically in the stretch after taking the lead, could go in the $300,000 Southwest on Feb. 14. Mr. Z, the even-money favorite Monday, galloped 13/ miles Friday morning. … Nine different trainers won a race Friday, giving 41 different trainers at least one victory after the meet’s first 63 races. … The average $2 win payoff was $24 on Friday, boosted by Springandaprayer’s $128.20 payoff. The average win mutuel on the other eight races was $11. … Thursday’s average $2 win mutual was nearly $17 after an opening five days when the average winner paid right at $15. Seven days and 63 races into the meet, the average win mutuel is $16.60. Of the 63 winners, 37 have paid at least $10 to win. … Journeyman jockey Floyd Wethey Jr. has won on three of his first 12 mounts, with the winning mutuels totaling $193.60, an average of $64.50 per winner. … Less than a week after earning an Eclipse Award as North America’s top apprentice jockey, 2012 Lake Hamilton High School graduate Drayden Van Dyke collected his first victory as a journeyman Friday with Irish-bred Ernest Shackleton at Santa Anita Park. Friday was Van Dyke’s first day riding without the benefit of a 5-pound weight allowance given to riders during their first year of racing.
