Dedicated, focused
I worked as a registered nurse for three decades and experienced an interesting phenomenon. I followed orders written by medical doctors. Of the hundreds I’ve encountered, perhaps 40 or 50 were African Americans. Many of them, both men and women, came from poor backgrounds. When I asked how they achieved such a high status, I received inspiring answers: “I read books voraciously.” “I studied when other kids were playing.” “I sacrificed a lot of social activities.” “Didn’t waste time.” “I literally worked day and night.”
My favorite was this: “Anyone can be a physician. All you have to do is stay focused for 21 years after high school.” I never met one male or female doctor who felt a sense of entitlement. They all paid the price with blood, sweat and tears.
These are our heroes and role models. JAMES F. MARSH
