LR man charged, jailed after pursuit, standoff

- SCOTT CARROLL

A man who led North Little Rock police on a vehicle chase late Saturday was arrested after an hours- long standoff with officers, the department reported.

Police pulled over Perry DeWayne Brown, 35, for a traffic violation about 11: 45 p. m. in the area of Arkansas 35 and Kelly Road, an arrest report states. Brown appeared “extremely nervous,” according to the report, and he sped away soon after being stopped.

The report states Brown drove on the wrong side of the road and at speeds “well above the posted speed limit” with three children and a woman in the vehicle. Police said he pulled onto West Hillcrest Road, a dead- end street, and a woman and boy jumped from the vehicle as Brown turned around and continued driving.

The woman, who was not identified in the report, yelled at Brown to stop. The other children could be heard screaming in the vehicle, police said.

Brown abandoned the vehicle nearby and fled into a residence at 6803 Norman Road, where he refused to surrender to police, according to the report. Tactical officers entered the residence at 4: 21 a. m. Sunday and arrested Brown. No injuries were reported. Court records show an arrest warrant had been issued five days earlier for Brown. He’d been wanted on a charge of failure to appear in a felony drug possession case. It was the second time in the case Brown missed a court appearance.

Brown, of Little Rock, was charged with felony fleeing, refusal to submit to arrest, obstructing governmental operations and three counts of felony endangering the welfare of a minor.

He was being held in the Pulaski County jail Monday.
