Mayfield returns to mash Cowboys

STILLWATER, Okla. — Baker Mayfield threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score and No. 3 Oklahoma beat No. 11 Oklahoma State 58-23 on Saturday night to take the Big 12 title and likely a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Mayfield was knocked out of the previous game with a concussion, but he was fearless against the Cowboys, rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown. The Sooners (111, 8-1 Big 12) gained 524 yards, including 344 on the ground, to claim their third victory over a ranked opponent in three weeks.

Joe Mixon ran for 136 yards and two touchdowns, Samaje Perine had 131 yards and two scores, and Jordan Thomas intercepted two passes and returned one for a touchdown for the Sooners.

J.W. Walsh passed for 325 yards and two scores, and James Washington caught seven passes for 169 yards for the Cowboys (10-2, 7-2).

Oklahoma rolled to a 4420 halftime lead. The Sooners gained 359 yards on 36 plays before the break. Perine had touchdown runs of 68 and 25 yards, and Mixon added a 66yard scoring run in the half.

Walsh started for Mason Rudolph, who limped at times during the loss to Baylor the previous week. He entered the game in the second quarter, played one possession and threw an interception that Thomas returned 32 yards for a touchdown to give Oklahoma a 34-10 lead.

Walsh threw his first interception of the season in the second quarter when Thomas stepped in front of a pass and returned it 36 yards to set up Austin Seibert’s 40-yard field goal that made it 44-17. It was the second-highest point total for Oklahoma in any half of a Bedlam game, trailing just the 45 points the Sooners scored in the first half of the 1970 game.

Mayfield’s 5-yard keeper in the third quarter put the Sooners up 51-23.

Early in the fourth quarter, Perine, just a sophomore, became the 10th Sooner to rush for at least 3,000 yards in a career.

In other games involving Big 12 teams, Skyler Howard threw one touchdown pass and ran for another score to lead West Virginia to a 30-6 victory over Iowa State. Josh Lambert kicked three field goals for the Mountaineers, who won their fourth consecutive. … Kansas State scored two touchdowns after botched Kansas punts in the first quarter, and the Wildcats rolled from there to a 45-14 victory.
