At a time when the threats to bright futures for young people seem to abound, individuals and groups who serve as advocates for youth can’t get enough recognition.

Due credit was given to such advocates during the Pulaski County Youth Services’ second annual Champions of Youth Awards Dinner, held Nov. 12 in the Genesis III Room of Next Level Events.

Rhonda McBain served as event co-chairman, and masters of ceremonies were KATV, Channel 7, news personalities Alexis Rogers and Jason Pederson. Pre-event entertainment was provided by Rodney Block & the Real Music Lovers.

Tjuana Byrd and Owen McNulty gave opening remarks. Jeremy Owoh, longtime educator and assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction in the Jacksonville/North Pulaski School District, was presented with the Director’s Choice Award for work that includes conducting workshops on educating black boys.

Maria Touchstone, English for Speakers of Other Languages program coordinator for the North Little Rock School District, was presented the Leading Educator’s Award for her work as acting director of the Seis Puentes Immigrant Education and Resource Center and as a volunteer.

State Rep. Warwick Sabin (D-Little Rock), executive director of the Arkansas Regional Innovation Hub, was presented the Visionary Award for his volunteer work with young people; and the Pi Omicron chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for such public service projects as an annual back-to-school backpack and supplies giveaway.
