2016 Master Gardener training scheduled
The University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service in White County is seeking new applicants for the Master Gardener Program. A new series of training classes will be conducted on five consecutive Wednesdays: Feb. 24 and March 2, 9, 16 and 23.
The program is open to anyone with a strong interest in gardening, a willingness to learn and a desire to educate others in recommended gardening practices. The cost of the initial training and materials is $75, which includes the first year’s dues.
All sessions will be held on the Arkansas State University-Searcy campus. Each day’s activities will begin at 8 a.m. and conclude about 4:30 p.m. Preregistration is required. The deadline for applications to be received is Feb. 10.
Participants will receive 40 hours of instruction in basic horticulture and research-based information, including instruction in vegetable and fruit production, lawn care and the use of ornamentals in landscaping. The course will cover other timely topics and include on-site visits. Classes are under the direction of Extension Service agents and specialists. The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture.
New Master Gardeners are required to complete 40 hours of volunteer work within one year of their training. These hours can be obtained through project work and other Master Gardener activities within White County.
Master Gardeners who wish to continue in the program each year must recertify for each successive year by completion of 20 hours of educational activities and 20 hours of volunteer work for White County Master Gardener projects and activities. Participants’ individual skills are utilized in filling this requirement.
In addition to the training, a monthly White County Master Gardener meeting is conducted for those who can attend. Educational presentations are made at the meetings, and the group plans and manages projects and special events.
Anyone who requires a reasonable accommodation to participate in the training or needs materials in another format is asked to contact a County Extension office as soon as possible. Anyone who is hearing impaired may dial 711 for Arkansas Relay.
