Inmate stabbed in fight at Grady unit

One inmate was stabbed during a fight at the Varner Unit in Grady on Wednesday afternoon, an Arkansas Department of Correction official said.

Two inmates were involved in an altercatio­n at around 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, and correction­al officers responded to the situation, according to a statement from the department.

The wounded inmate was taken to Jefferson Regional Medical Center in Pine Bluff, said Wendy Kelley, director of the Department of Correction.

An agent from the Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigat­ion Division was dispatched to investigat­e, said department spokesman Bill Sadler.

The Varner Unit, located on U.S. 65, includes a supermax unit. Authoritie­s did not say where within the prison the fight took place.
