–––––❖––––– RICHMOND, Va. — Shirley Lee Murry Pitts, 82, a native of Arkadelphi­a, Ark., died on Monday, May 23, at Gayton Terrace in Richmond, Va. She was the daughter of the late William B. Murry who was the owner of Murry-Ruggles Funeral Home. She battled cancer, but peacefully passed away. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cmdr. (USN) Paul Denney Pitts. They raised their family in Alexandria, Va.

Shirley graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayettevil­le, Ark., in 1955 where she earned her BSW in Social Work. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, and she served as their chapter social chairwoman. Upon graduation, she worked for the Arkansas State Child Welfare Department, aiding many children and families. She also held the position of staff member of the Red Cross. While residing in Little Rock, she was a member of the Little Rock Cotillion Club. For over 35 years, she was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria. She held many volunteer positions such as New Member coordinato­r, Sunday school teacher, Chairwoman of the Church Bazaar, President of the United Methodist Women, member of Aldersgate Board of Trustees, and a representa­tive of the United Methodist Conference, as well as other positions. Shirley spent most of her volunteer hours working in her field of social work. She volunteere­d at the Mount Vernon Community Mental Health, Fort Belvoir Red Cross, Mount Vernon Hospital, Meals on Wheels, IMP Building Mental Health. She was also the former Reference Chairwoman for the Northern Virginia alumni of Kappa Kappa Gamma. She was also a member of the DAR.

She is survived by her three sons and daughters-in-law: Murry Pitts and Elise Pitts of Norfolk, Va., Alan Pitts of Richmond, Va., and Jay Pitts and Lisa Pitts of Coral Springs, Fla. Her grandchild­ren are Dr. Lexie Soult and husband Dr. Micheal Soult of Norfolk, Va., Kyle Pitts of Coral Springs, Fla., and C.C. Pitts of Norfolk, VA., and Kristi Pitts of Tallahasse­e, Fla.

The family would like to extend its appreciati­on for the support and care given by Massey Cancer Center at VCU. Viewing was held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Va., on Wednesday, May 25. Funeral has held at Aldersgate United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 26. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., on Friday, July 29 at 11 a.m.
