New York OKs resumption DraftKings, FanDuel and three other daily fantasy sports operators were cleared to resume business in the state on Monday, just in time for the approaching NFL season and Major League Baseball playoffs. New York’s Gaming Commission granted temporary permits to five companies that run the popular online games following passage of a state law that attempted to resolve a legal conflict over whether they constituted illegal gambling or a game of skill. DraftKings was offering games in New York within hours of the permits being announced. FanDuel planned to begin offering its contests to players Monday night. Permits were also issued to three other operators: Yahoo, FantasyDraft and DraftKings. In the games, players assemble a roster of athletes in a sport, using the individuals’ actual performance statistics to determine the winner. They pay entry fees and win prizes for outperforming other contestants’ rosters. In March, FanDuel and DraftKings suspended business in New York after Attorney General Eric Schneiderman likened the games to illegal gambling. Lawmakers then passed a law that defined daily fantasy sports as a game of skill — resolving the central argument in a lawsuit brought by Schneiderman, a Democrat, against New York-based FanDuel and Boston-based DraftKings. Gov. Andrew Cuomo, also a Democrat, signed the law this month.

Marinovich arrested Former Southern California and Oakland Raiders quarterback Todd Marinovich was arrested after he was found naked with methamphetamine in a stranger’s back yard by Irvine police investigating a call about a nude man wandering a nearby hiking trail, according to authorities. Marinovich, 47, who once bore the nickname “Robo quarterback,” was booked on suspicion of trespassing; possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine; possession of drug paraphernalia; and possession of marijuana, Irvine police Cmdr. Mike Hallinan said Monday. In recent years, the father of two has worked as an artist, painting public murals and other pieces. Marinovich was a football standout at Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana and then went on to play for USC, where he led the Trojans to a Rose Bowl victory in 1990. He was later drafted by the then-Los Angeles Raiders, but was let go after two seasons. In the late 1990s, he pleaded guilty to cultivating marijuana and illegally pos- sessing prescription medications. A brief career in arena football came to an end several months after he was arrested for heroin possession in 2000. Marinovich was arrested for drug possession in 2005 and once again two years later.

Another Phils fan injured Philadelphia Phillies fan Erin Neyer was struck in the mouth by a foul ball Sunday after she pushed her 6-year-old daughter, Riley, out of harm’s way at Citizens Banks Park. It was the second consecutive Phillies game in which a foul ball struck a fan, and it came hours after shortstop Freddie Galvis criticized the team for not providing protective nets behind the dugouts that would prevent such incidents. A young girl was struck in the face Saturday night by a foul ball hit by Galvis into almost the same area. Galvis threw his arms in the air Sunday when a ball sailed into the stands behind the third-base dugout, section 130. Neyer, 36, was taken to the first-aid station inside Citizens Bank Park where she was examined by a doctor. Her lips were swollen, and her mouth was full of cuts and contusions. The Phillies, who extended the netting behind home plate by 10 feet before the season, said they are considering extending it further.

Woods named co-captain There will be an extra perk for the 12 golfers who make the U.S. Ryder Cup team — the eight who will qualify on points after The Barclays on Sunday night and the four who will be chosen by captain Davis Love III. They will get to spend a week with someone they haven’t seen in a while, Tiger Woods. Woods, who won the first U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in 2002 and been in both subsequent tournaments on the course, has missed the entire season while recovering from back surgery. But he will be an assistant captain for the American team that will face Europe at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn. Woods will be joined by Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker and Tom Lehman as assistant captains.

Power roars at Pocono Will Power continued his late-season run Monday, holding off pole-sitter Mikhail Aleshin at bay after a final restart, and won the rain-delayed IndyCar race at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa. It was the fourth victory in six races for Power, the 29th of his career, and cut 38 points off the lead in the standings held by Team Penske teammate Simon Pagenaud. Pagenaud finished 18th after a late crash and Power trails by 20 with three races remaining in the season. Power’s surge has moved him into a tie in all-time victories with Rick Mears and Scott Dixon, and also includes second-place finishes at Iowa and Mid-Ohio. Defending race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay finished third, Josef Newgarden was fourth and Sebastien Bourdais fifth, thanks to late-race pit strategy.
